Each year brings a batch of new memoirs, ranging from works by former teachers and celebrity has-beens to disillusioned soldiers and bestselling novelists. In addition to becoming bestsellers in their own right, memoirs have become a popular object of inquiry in the academy and a mainstay in most MFA workshops. Courses in what is now called "life writing" study memoir alongside personal essays, diaries, and autobiographies. Memoir: An Introduction proffers a succinct and comprehensive survey of the genre (and its many subgenres) while taking readers through the various techniques, themes, and debates that have come to characterize the ubiquitous literary form. Its fictional origins are traced to eighteenth-century British novels; its early American roots are examined in Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and colonial captivity narratives; and its ethical conundrums are considered via the imbroglios brought on by the questionable claims in Rigoberta MenchĂș's I, Rigoberta, and more notoriously, James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. Alongside these more traditional literary forms, Couser expands the discussion of memoir to include film with what he calls "documemoir" (exemplified in Nathaniel Kahn's My Architect) and graphic narratives like Art Spiegelman's Maus.

Helps with the terminology and examples
By Gerry Pedraza
I'm taking a creative non-fiction class and I'm writing a memoir style piece that's why I bought it. This book was recommended by the professor and it does help to get a better picture of the genre as well as quite a bunch of good examples and a description of published memoirs.

and provides an excellent discussion of the work Memoir does
By m> Suzanne Lundquist
G. Thomas Couser defines, gives a history of, and provides an excellent discussion of the work Memoir does. The American Roots of Memoir in the spirit of democracy makes sense. The depth and bredth of Couser's research makes this text foundational to the study of the genre of Memoir.

"Must Read" book if you want to write a memoir
By Lilith Island
To my mind, memoir is as idiosyncratic as the person writing it and boils down to one word: memory. Because memory is not fact and is unreliable, memoir is more an expression of what we choose to remember, how we remember it, and how the memories affect us and so should carry a great deal more weight than it does when reading contemporary memoirs. In short, I believe this is a "must read" book for anyone thinking of writing a memoir today. I didn't give it a five star because great memoirs like Stephen Spender's World Within World (aka autobiography), considered one of the best memoirs ever written, and Stefan Zweig's The World of Yesterday, a memoir classic, are not mentioned. Contemporary memoirs fall far short of memoirs like these. That's a real shame.
