Bird Brain: An Exploration of Avian Intelligence, by Nathan Emery

Birds have not been known for their high IQs, which is why a person of questionable intelligence is sometimes called a "birdbrain." Yet in the past two decades, the study of avian intelligence has witnessed dramatic advances. From a time when birds were seen as simple instinct machines responding only to stimuli in their external worlds, we now know that some birds have complex internal worlds as well. This beautifully illustrated book provides an engaging exploration of the avian mind, revealing how science is exploding one of the most widespread myths about our feathered friends--and changing the way we think about intelligence in other animals as well.

Bird Brain looks at the structures and functions of the avian brain, and describes the extraordinary behaviors that different types of avian intelligence give rise to. It offers insights into crows, jays, magpies, and other corvids--the "masterminds" of the avian world--as well as parrots and some less-studied species from around the world. This lively and accessible book shows how birds have sophisticated brains with abilities previously thought to be uniquely human, such as mental time travel, self-recognition, empathy, problem solving, imagination, and insight.

Written by a leading expert and featuring a foreword by Frans de Waal, renowned for his work on animal intelligence, Bird Brain shines critical new light on the mental lives of birds.

Review
"Complex ideas are made intelligible with the aid of sharp, and often stunning, design--gorgeous close-up photographs and smart infographics. The lovely depictions of the experiments supporting the science are particularly noteworthy."--Library Journal

"Our understanding of bird brains and behaviour has been revolutionised by recent studies of avian cognition, intelligence, brain anatomy, migration and tool use, and Nathan Emery, primatologist-turned-ornithologist, has been at the forefront of this revolution. He is well placed, therefore, to provide us with this very welcome summary of our current state of knowledge."--Tim Birkhead, Times Higher Education

"This book is a fascinating exploration of how birds learn, think and feel. The book looks at the structure of the avian brain and the abilities it provides to our feathered neighbors. It does this without being stuffy or beyond the reach of the general public with an interest in birds. Short essays on each topic allow a person to explore the book in snippets or to skip around the book to read whatever catches your eye."--A Charm of Finches blog

"The book is beautifully illustrated with high resolution pictures showing the diversity of birds and describing the complex methods birds use to successfully survive in an ever-changing world. The book also focuses on the relationships of birds to other animals and the environment."--NSTA Recommends

"How big is a bird's brain? Big enough has always been my answer. The tiny hummingbird weighs less than an ounce and yet it can remember where every flower in its territory is located and how long it takes to refill with nectar. Big enough. A new book by Dr. Nathan Emery goes well beyond my analysis with interesting, fun and informative presentation on the latest research into avian intelligence. . . . The book is beautifully illustrated and provides an engaging exploration of the avian mind."--Sam Crowe, Birdzilla.com

"[Bird Brain] is really great, the best book out there right now on animal intelligence, possibly the best book so far this year on birds. This is the kind of book you want laying around the house or classroom to learn stuff from. If you are writing or teaching about anything in evolution or behavior, this is a great way to key into the current work on bird intelligence."--Greg Laden's Science Blog

From the Back Cover

"Bird Brain is a winner. It is engaging and very well written, and the illustrations are excellent--dramatic, informative, and fun."--Frank Gill, author of Ornithology

All Package and All Goods, Too
By Claire S.
It would be easy to be seduced by the brilliant layout and design of this book, especially in the Kindle version. It is visually more appealing than any electronic book I have ever seen. But that would short-change Nathan Emery's research and presentation of information considerably. This book is a valuable addition to any library.

If you're interested, buy the book, NOT the Kindle edition!

Combines a nice review of neuropsychological avian studies with neuroanatomy.
However, the neuroanatomical diagrams really need to be improved - they resemble a Tokyo subway map!
Further, the formating is almost incompatible with the Kindle reader. The anatomic descriptions are matched with the diagrams on what is most likely the facing page on the paper book.
It's more like reading a massively enlarged PDF on a computer screen. Also, if you thumb or finger touches the lower edge, you get some kind of page menu.
If you're interested, buy the book, NOT the Kindle edition!

A Valuable Contribution to the Understanding of Intelligence
By Brian Hunt
This book is, as far as I know, unique in its subject: Bird intelligence. Such a book is long overdue since much research progress has been made. It is also very important in its own right and for the light it sheds on human and other animal intelligence. The author, Nathan Emery has conducted extensive research in the area. The book is written for the general reader and is greatly enhanced by its numerous splendid illustrations.

Despite its strong points, there are features of the book that I feel detract from its effectiveness. Each of the seven chapters is chopped up into subtopics that are only loosely linked together, so one feels one is reading a series of (very) short stories rather than a continuous narrative. Furthermore, it appears that a rather arbitrary and unhelpful structure has been imposed on the subtopics, perhaps by the book designer: With a few exceptions, each subtopic is confined to one double page. This is helpful in integrating text and illustrations but one often feels that the subject has been left unfinished because of the limited space available for the text. Also, for all who do not have perfect vision, reading the small, low contrast font is a strain.

One aspect of the content troubled me: Many of the intelligence tests that were described were in laboratory conditions using man-made objects, like ice cube trays and plastic tubes. This, it seems to me, immediately puts the avian subject at a disadvantage when compared to a human. We are familiar with the materials and purposes of such equipment, a bird is not. As a contrast, it would be instructive to take an urban human to New Caledonia and to test his or her ability to extract grubs from awkward locations in trees using only the natural materials of the area. I would be surprised if our human subject comes close to the twig tools carefully fashioned by the local crows. Dr. Nathan does not discuss this objection.

For too long, humans have been reluctant to admit that we share intelligence widely and deeply with the rest of the animal kingdom. This book shows that many species of birds are surprisingly intelligent, in doing so it should make us more respectful of our fellow creatures.
