My favorite textbook in basic International Economics

I am a university professor who regularly teaches a course in International Economics. After having considered many textbooks (Pugel, Feenstra, Krugman etc.), I decided to adopt this book for my class. I like the book, and I feel that my students like it too. The greatest strength of this book is how "minimal" it is. It is striking how the authors manage to explain the major theoretical concepts in a concise, yet intuitive way. Indeed, most theoretical analyses in this book simply rest on the analyses of the interactions between indifference curves, price line and production possibilities curve and a few other curves. ie., the authors rely much on a "geometric" proof strategy (cf. proofs of HO theorem, Rybcynzki theorem, and Stolper-Samuelson theorem in the appendix of Chapter 4). Naturally, it assumes a simplified assumption that there are two countries and two goods, while the extensions and generalizations are left in the appendices. But the insights from the analyses are lucid, precise, and very readable. The only disadvantage I can see is that it does not contain a lot of exercises for students to practice. But, apart from this point, I believe that this is a very suitable textbook for a first course in International Economics.

I do not feel this book is a good educational tool

I have recently taken Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. The subject was difficult, but able to be grasped with some study. (I am an adult student)As for the "International Economics" textbook, I feel it is very poor as an educational medium. If you ever really sit and attempt to read this thing, all you are reading are a bunch of letters. There is no sense to the material and very little attempt to clarify anything. It is confusing enough to learn a difficult subject without having to decipher every letter of the alphabet into a different word or variable. I understand brevity is necessary to avoid repetition, but please! This is to be a learning tool. There should at least be some attempt to 'spell out' the information once. I feel this book was a very bad investment on my part, and would never have been my chosen text for this topic. I wouldn't even give it one star, but that was as low as I was able to select.

Adult love and grief

Hal Robinson is sixteen, has just finished his school exams and has no idea what he wants to do with his life. Will he stay on at school? If so what will he study? Or will he get a job like his father wants? Hal lives at Southend, the part of London where the Thames River meets the sea. One day he 'borrows' a friend's sail-boat without asking permission. A storm blows up and soon Hal capsizes the boat. Then into his life sails Barry Gorman, eighteen year old, expert sailor, who rescues Hal and who it seems will soon sort Hal's life out. Soon Hal finds himself falling deeply in love with Barry, and it seems his every fantasy is about to be fulfilled. But, as Hal reveals at the very beginning of the book, Barry's life is destined to be cut short.

This book is written in a quirky, interesting, experimental manner. The text consists of Hal's first person account, six "running reports" by Hal's social worker, two newspaper clippings, and a school essay. The personal account features "action replays" in which Hal goes over the scene he has just described filling in the psychological details that could not be included in the flow of action. One important theme to arise is the 'postmodern' question of how much a written account mirrors reality? Hal desperately wants to be honest, but no matter how much he tries his words fail to describe the true 'feeling' of events, or can be interpreted in a way that varies from the 'truth'.

While being an account of a death the book is often surprisingly funny. I found myself laughing out loud in several parts. Grief, however, inevitably takes the main stage at the end of the story, and is represented in some considerable depth. This is not really a tear-jerker though, as throughout the book we have always known that Barry will die.

Of course the book is also a description of first adult love, in all its depth and pain. As the story progresses Hal moves from confused teenager to wounded but wiser adult. While this could be described as a 'gay' story the book can be also enjoyed by 'straight' adolescent readers: love, death and truth are in fact universal themes no matter in what details we dress them. The story includes some sex but it is only very discretely referred to.

This is an English novel and some colloquialisms and cultural references are included which US audiences may find difficult to understand. There is not enough of this though to make the book inaccessible: in fact most of the text should be crystal clear.

Arthur Kohl is a program manager in the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International. He previously worked for the Fluor Corporation, where he was Chief Chemical Engineer in the Research Division. He has been awarded many honors for contributions to chemical engineering. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the West. He has been awarded more than 25 patents in gas purification and other chemical engineering fields.

Richard Nielsen is a Director of Process Engineering at Fluor Daniel's Irvine, California office. His 20 years with Fluor Daniel include work in gas treating, gas processing, and refining. He holds a BS degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS degree from the University of Southern California, and an MBA degree from the University of California, Irvine.

Excellent Source

This is not the prettiest book nor is it the most clearly written. However, it is an excellent survey of techniques in precision engineering. Slocum clearly understands his stuff and trys to cover it in a reasonably comprehensive manner.

An excellent resource

I have been using this book on and off for many years as both a resource and a sanity check for certain ideas. It is not a textbook, nor is it a "do it yourself" guide. It is a combination of inspired practical ideas presented in a reasonably complete manner; it is an engineering book, not a science book.

Slocum rambles a bit, but he isn't hard to follow if you are technically competent.

About the Author
Nathan Emery is senior lecturer in cognitive biology at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests focus on what corvids, apes, and parrots understand about their social and physical worlds, especially others' mental states, insight, and imagination, as well as the psychology and evolution of innovation and creativity. He is currently working with the ravens at the Tower of London. He is the coeditor of Social Intelligence: From Brain to Culture and The Cognitive Neuroscience of Social Behaviour, and is on the editorial board of the journals Animal Cognition and Journal of Comparative Psychology. He is the author of more than eighty publications, including papers in Nature, Science, and Current Biology. His work has been extensively covered by international newspapers and magazines, in books, and on TV.

All Package and All Goods, Too

It would be easy to be seduced by the brilliant layout and design of this book, especially in the Kindle version. It is visually more appealing than any electronic book I have ever seen. But that would short-change Nathan Emery's research and presentation of information considerably. This book is a valuable addition to any library.

Combines a nice review of neuropsychological avian studies with neuroanatomy.
However, the neuroanatomical diagrams really need to be improved - they resemble a Tokyo subway map!
Further, the formating is almost incompatible with the Kindle reader. The anatomic descriptions are matched with the diagrams on what is most likely the facing page on the paper book.
It's more like reading a massively enlarged PDF on a computer screen. Also, if you thumb or finger touches the lower edge, you get some kind of page menu.
If you're interested, buy the book, NOT the Kindle edition!

A Valuable Contribution to the Understanding of Intelligence

This book is, as far as I know, unique in its subject: Bird intelligence. Such a book is long overdue since much research progress has been made. It is also very important in its own right and for the light it sheds on human and other animal intelligence. The author, Nathan Emery has conducted extensive research in the area. The book is written for the general reader and is greatly enhanced by its numerous splendid illustrations.

Despite its strong points, there are features of the book that I feel detract from its effectiveness. Each of the seven chapters is chopped up into subtopics that are only loosely linked together, so one feels one is reading a series of (very) short stories rather than a continuous narrative. Furthermore, it appears that a rather arbitrary and unhelpful structure has been imposed on the subtopics, perhaps by the book designer: With a few exceptions, each subtopic is confined to one double page. This is helpful in integrating text and illustrations but one often feels that the subject has been left unfinished because of the limited space available for the text. Also, for all who do not have perfect vision, reading the small, low contrast font is a strain.

One aspect of the content troubled me: Many of the intelligence tests that were described were in laboratory conditions using man-made objects, like ice cube trays and plastic tubes. This, it seems to me, immediately puts the avian subject at a disadvantage when compared to a human. We are familiar with the materials and purposes of such equipment, a bird is not. As a contrast, it would be instructive to take an urban human to New Caledonia and to test his or her ability to extract grubs from awkward locations in trees using only the natural materials of the area. I would be surprised if our human subject comes close to the twig tools carefully fashioned by the local crows. Dr. Nathan does not discuss this objection.

For too long, humans have been reluctant to admit that we share intelligence widely and deeply with the rest of the animal kingdom. This book shows that many species of birds are surprisingly intelligent, in doing so it should make us more respectful of our fellow creatures.
