The boys of the Plattsburgh Academy, including Hiram, age 14, want to fight, but they cannot enlist. They go to General Macomb and he gives them an option: find a sponsor and he will muster them in to fight against the British. The boys find a sponsor, become Aiken's Volunteer Rifle Company, and successfully fight the British. And in fighting the British, Hiram grows from a boy to a man. This novel is based on actual events of September 1814.

A Must Have for your 1812 Book Collection

As a historian, I have the tendency to be a bit critical of historical novels and text books. As a scholar I want to see that the historical facts are accurate, but as an avid reader I want a book that is riveting. Joy Demarse was able to incorporate both of these skills within her novel. The historical facts regarding the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 are very accurate. Her use of primary documents, including diary entries from families that lived and survived the invasion of the English in Plattsburgh NY, add such incredible details and insight. This novel clearly allows us to understand how life was during the War of 1812 in Plattsburgh, NY and how the local men and families contributed to the aid of the US Military.

However, the most incredible aspect of the novel is Ms. Demarse's way of weaving a historical story that will keep teens and adults alike sitting on the edge of their seat. I began reading this book while waiting for a return flight home. Once I began reading it, I could not put it down. I read it through my first flight, my next layover and then my final flight. I HAD to know what happened to these boys. I wanted to return to Plattsburgh and walk their nine day journey. This is an excellent novel and as a museum manager of the War of 1812 Museum I will highly suggest that anyone interested in the history of the War of 1812 and the Battle of Plattsburgh read this book. I also encourage all middle school to high school history teachers to include this novel in their curriculum when they are teaching about the War of 1812.

Historical novella sheds new light

A very fine job of factual reconstruction based on excellent research in primary and secondary sources. Aimed at the young adult market, the author's fictional overlay of imagination and intelligence make this historical novella a strongly recommended book for discerning HS, YA and older readers. It was highly refreshing to learn something new in such an easy to follow narrative. The underlying theme of "Nine Days a Soldier" has a universality that is rather profound

I live in Champlain N.Y and found it ver interesting and recognized most of the family names annd being a celebration this year of the war of 1812 it was ver appropriate reading for the time . It wonderful to read history.

An excellent introduction...

Weinberg distills the essence from von Bertalanffy's classic and manages to present it in a very accessible fashion. The book has been out of print for quite a while so it is great to see a new edition. The message and information contained in here, although originally published in 1975, is now more relevant than ever.
Weinberg covers many aspects of systems theory beginning with the main stumbling block with the present scientific paradigm: the idea that the universe is mechanistic. His treatment is much more general than Robert Rosen's in "Life Itself" but still conveys why the mechanistic notion is flawed.
He then outlines the general systems theory approach before leading into the idea that a system is simply a way of looking at the world. He then outlines the principle of indifference. This leads straight into two sections outlining various aspects of making observations. Finally he discusses behaviour and then some general systems questions.
Throughout the book he uses many examples from disparate fields in conjunction with questions for further research. It is great to see someone who doesn't preach systems but actually uses the ideas.
Definitely a must-read as we decided how to solve the myriad of issues before us.

A primer of good and fearless thinking.

This book is a quiet little masterpiece, where its author shares his observations of his world in a personal way. With the same light touch, he also delves into the thought structures behind these observations. This is practical scientific philosophy with a folksy, conversational, almost homespun, style that never gets lost in abstractions or strays far from living examples in everyday life. Its lack of academic bluster and techo-pomposity is refreshing and informal, yet the insights have a power that cannot help but affect your own thought processes. An example ( for me) is the classification of all systems into three types: Determinate, Medium-number, and Statistical. This notion has proven to be fantastically useful over the years. Several other observations took some nerve to put into print. The net effect of the book is, at its end, also inspirational. Here is someone showing all of us how we can deal with the big, bad world in a friendly, humourous, courageous, and empowered way.

A MUST-READ for any profession

If I had to select a book that has influenced my thinking most, it would be this one. This book alone spurred my interest in Systems Research, and is one that I have gone back to re-read many times.
Gerald Weinberg has taken the essence of General Systems Theory and formatted it for the masses. His insight into the methodology, and his ability to combine humor with explanation makes this a must-read in the field. While many of the examples are programming-based, that does not detract from the usefullness of this work.
The publisher needs to understand the importance of this work, and put it back into print!

Practical and gentle suggestions for a spiritual life

For anyone interested in walking and talking a real, practical spirituality on a day to day basis, this is an excellent book. Millman's style is gentle and holistic, and reads a bit like a modern update of the excellent "You'll See It When You Believe It" by Wayne Dyer. This is very much a compliment!
Practical suggestions for physical, financial, mental, emotional and spiritual personal development are featured throughout. These are divided into twelve "gateways", beginning with recognizing your self-worth and ending with living your daily life as a spiritual practice in itself. The chapter on managing your money I found very useful when developing my own business as an astrologer. His treatment of sexuality, an area not always covered so openly in books of this kind, was another highlight. "Illuminating Your Shadow" is a balanced consideration of the dark side of anyone attempting to live a more spiritual life. Compassion for ourselves and others is continually emphasized in this section, as elsewhere.
Millman has used a wide range of quotes to support his ideas, contributions coming from Aldous Huxley, Miss Piggy and St. Augustine to name a few. My favourite is from Christopher Morley:- "No man is lonely while eating spaghetti; it requires so much attention".

* What to look for when reviewing books and records and what to ask the seller for
* One of the most critical processes done during the due diligence process is the underwriting and financial analysis, which is constantly being revised during that process. In the book there is a list of questions that must be addressed and answered while adjusting your financial analysis of the investment and will help you to more accurately assess the potential of how the numbers should work
* How to deal with the appraiser and appraisal process to be more proactive and enhance the potential for the highest possible loan amount
* How to ensure that you are getting everything you deserve when finalizing the transaction and what to look for on the closing statement that may be added by the seller or lender as a credit to them, that you can get eliminated or at least negotiated down by being aware of what to look for

It is all relevant as well as applicable, and this information can be used to purchase any of them. It will pay for itself many, many times over. I still use it as a reference tool whenever I'm involved with due diligence. We need reminding as much as we need learning. There's just too many things to remember.

Although there is no replacement for direct, hands-on experience, the benefit of an expert's knowledge and direction makes for a great substitute. This thorough book will help guide any real estate practitioner through simple and complicated transactions alike, preventing and minimizing costly due diligence mistakes. Whether acting as a principal or as an advisor, this book will help you be more successful in investing for your own account, or in advising your clients. Likewise, whatever your experience level, you will be better with this book as a resource because of its thoughtful and precise instruction --- it is real-life, practical application at its best, not untested theory. Finally, having known Brian as a friendly competitor and colleague for over 20 years, I recommend this book mostly because of its author. I'm glad to have come across this book recently and recommend it highly to anyone involved in real estate, commercial or residential. The Author did a fantastic job breaking down all aspects of what to look for when buying commercial real estate which can be also highly useful for sellers as well in preparing their properties for sale.

The book gives you a very strong foundation in all areas of how commercial real estate works, leaving the reader with a very good overview of what to focus on prior to making the offer as well as during their 'free-look' period. I learned more reading this book than I learned in my college real estate courses.

Easy read, well written and an excellent reference manual you'll want to keep on your desk going forward. Two thumbs up!
