Athletics and politics collide in a critical event for Nazi Germany and the contemporary world. The torch relay -- that staple of Olympic pageantry -- first opened the summer games in 1936 in Berlin. Proposed by the Nazi Propaganda Ministry, the relay was to carry the symbolism of a new Germany across its route through southeastern and central Europe. Soon after the Wehrmacht would march in jackboots over the same terrain. The Olympic festival was a crucial part of the Nazi regime's mobilization of power. Nazi Games offers a superb blend of history and sport. The narrative includes a stirring account of the international effort to boycott the games, derailed finally by the American Olympic Committee and the determination of its head, Avery Brundage, to participate. Nazi Games also recounts the dazzling athletic feats of these Olympics, including Jesse Owens's four gold-medal performances and the marathon victory of Korean runner Kitei Son, the Rising Sun of imperial Japan on his bib. 25 b/w photographs.

Details like this make the book memorable

Informative. Detailed. But what seems to be the amusing part is trying to decipher the author's biases for and against points of view .Is the book a cusotmary book of the Nazi's anti -Jew policy AND simultaneously, the author seems to have hidden jealousy of wishing to be a part of the Nazi regime. Mr Clay describes the opening ceremony in excruitating detail. He notes the "Nazi flag was being flown". That was the established flag of the Nazi era. The United States officially recognized and accepted this. So why the surprise? More surprising was the detail that Mr Clay provided about United States based Jews who wanted the US Olympic team to BOYCOTT the 1936 Summer Olympics. Due to Germany not allowing GERMAN Jews to practice THUS NOT ALLOWED TO QUALIFY, therefore not having GERMAN Jews on the GERMAN team. I thought they were sent to gas chambers. According to the text, the US Jewry sent threatening letters to the US Olympic committee not to send funds and ATTEMPTED to pressure the US Negro delegation to not participate. And that included Jessie Owens. !!! We know the outcome. Hurray. Jessie Owens. Why not protest gas chambers and concentration camps? So details like this along with my opinion on Mr. Clay made the book memorable.
