The BEST all around quantum book in existence

This book provides all the concepts a student could ever need. Martin includes hard to find explanations of phase polarized photons as well as a concise explanation of the Dirac Notation of state vectors that no one else seems to want to explain. It is wonderful not to have to lug a calculus and linear algebra book with you to read it. The gods smiled upon me the day I stumbled onto this gem.

An excellent introductory text

This book is as close to a self contained introduction as you are likely to find. In addition to covering the standard topics in a rigorous way, it incorporates all the necessary background mathematics as a series of digressions spread throughout the text. The concepts are illustrated with clear examples and sufficient exercises for clarity.
The book goes up to time dependent perturbation theory and variational principles. This should be sufficient to tackle atomic and nuclear physics at undergraduate level.
The one omission from the background is Fourier transforms. But as this is well covered in introductory maths courses, and is not needed to follow the material as it is developed this is hardly a criticism.
I would highly recommend this book as a self contained first course (If you can find a copy!)
