Best book on Fiends I have read
By Jared W. Brown
I own all the planescape products so having read and able to compare them. I would say that this is one of the best. I would not run any Campain on the blood war without this book and Hellbound The Blood War box set. Colin Mccomb did a good job on this product. It goes threw each of the Fiend Races and explains each in great detail.

Review of the habits and lives of the lower planar entities
By Edward Pokorski
A great review of the lifestyles and habits of the lower planar races (Baatezu, Tanar'ri, Yugoloth) Provides EXTENSIVE role-playing potential, while leaving room for a DM to add or leave out parts of the guide. The book also covers some of the other lesser, often forgotten, lower planar races such as hags and hordlings

Great learning resource
By Mo
I have purchased quite a few books, cds, and online training programs, but none of them are as comprehensive as this one. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a pingyin dictionary that goes both ways? True this is just a mini dictionary, but it is most useful. The book also deals with structure without burying you in grammar and grammatical terminology. For the price, this is a really good acquisition. I noticed one reviewer had complained about the vocabulary content. In my opinion that is ridiculous. No one can learn vocabulary for you - you have to do it yourself and there are many resources out there such as BYKI online. No book can do it for you. The point of a training resource is to teach you structure and application using typical content. The only thing I would have liked in this book is pronunciation in brackets for the vocabulary lists. The book relies on your learning the initials and finals of pingyin, and one really must do that first before trying to continue if you want to avoid learning wrong pronunciation. (and no! pingyin bears little resemblence to English phonetics - you have to relearn your alphabet with a whole new set of sounds in many cases eg. c = ts, zh = j, z = ds, etc.)

Overall good. Dialogues need improvement.
By Book Lover XYZ
I'm a native Chinese, teaching an adult beginner Chinese class in my community as a volunteer. I've been looking for a suitable text book but failed to find one, until a friend recommended this book. This book doesn't teach reading/writing Chinese characters and is suitable as introductory material for a course up to 1/2 year length.

The pros: The book attempts to explain the language phenomena from the viewpoint of English. For example, it emphasizes that Chinese sentences have more rigid structures. It's good for an English speaker to understand the differences and the fine points that many other books fail to explain.

The cons: The dialogues are somewhat forced at the best and outrageous sometimes. For example, see this exchange in Chapter 8 when a couple is trying to rent a room:

Renter: Are there cockroaches in your rooms?
Landlord: No. There aren't cockroaches in our rooms. There're one or two roaches in my house. But it doesn't matter - they won't bite.

Anyway, I still plan to use this book as a reference book for my class. As for dialogues, I'll pick and choose, certainly skipping cockroaches.

The Price of Citizenship: Redefining the American Welfare State, by Michael B. Katz

For Michael B. Katz, the term "welfare state" describes the intricate web of government programs, employer-provided benefits, and semiprivate organizations intended to promote economic security and to guarantee the basic necessities of life for all citizens: food, shelter, medical care, protection in childhood, and support in old age. In this updated edition of his seminal work The Price of Citizenship, Katz traces the evolution of the welfare state from colonial relief programs through the war on poverty and into our own age, marked by the "end of welfare as we know it."

Katz argues that in the last decades, three great forces—a ferocious war on dependence, which has singled out the most vulnerable; the devolution of authority within both government and the private sector; and the application of market models to social policy—have permeated all aspects of the social contract. The Price of Citizenship shows how these changes have propelled America toward a future of increased inequality and decreased security as individuals compete for success in an open market with ever fewer protections against misfortune, power, and greed. A new chapter, written for this edition, explains how these trends continue in the post-9/11 era and how the response to Hurricane Katrina exposed the weaknesses of America's social safety net.

Offering grounds for modest optimism, the new chapter also points to countervailing trends that may modify and even partially reverse the effects of recent welfare history.

From Publishers Weekly
Arguably the leading historian of American social welfare, Katz (In the Shadow of the Poorhouse; The Undeserving Poor; etc.) has written a defining history of post-Nixon transformations of America's welfare state, including its nonprofit and private sectors (private pensions, health insurance, etc.). Three forces drive the welfare revolutions, he says a savage, selective war on dependence, a push for devolution of power from the federal level to the states and an often na‹ve, ill-conceived use of market models shaping a "master narrative of policy reform" involving "the discovery of a crisis of numbers and costs (rising rolls); the assignment of blame to morally suspect persons (the undeserving); the reduction of program size through controlling eligibility more than reducing benefits (reform); the measurement of achievement by fewer beneficiaries (success); and the failure to track the fate of those denied help (willful ignorance)." Katz's clear articulation of underlying forces and patterns never overwhelms the rich, compelling detail of specific histories involving workers' compensation, disability insurance, unemployment, medical care, food security, urban policy, urban housing, homelessness, Social Security and welfare. Highlights of earlier history serve to dispel common myths (there was no golden age of faith-based private charity), explain the genesis of modern policies (always products of conflict and compromise) and provide perspective for current proposals (which often echo past mistakes). Katz quotes and refers to a wide range of experts as well as political actors, producing a vivid sense of immediacy matched with keen reflection. Without preaching, Katz meticulously reveals the folly of emulating disintegrative forces rather than balancing them. This is a masterpiece of contemporary history. (Apr.)Forecast: This will be important reading for people in the social welfare fields as well as interested citizens, and a six-city author tour will help bring the book to public attention.

From Library Journal
In this exhaustive historical and political study of welfare in 20th-century America, political scientist Katz (Improving Poor People) focuses on the destructive influence of the market economy on social welfare programs. He argues that "the market's radical individualism, its processes of marginalization and exclusion, and its subversion of the public sphere" has a "corrosive impact" on our society because it "threatens our national cohesion" the very basis of citizenship. He deplores the transfer of political authority from the federal government to the states and worries about our country's future in an era when such benefits of citizenship as healthcare, unemployment compensation, and aid for the elderly will be denied those most needing public assistance. Well documented and passionately argued, this lucid and persuasive defense of public welfare insists that undoing the welfare state will change the reality of American citizenship, making it not a right but a privilege open only to those with money. The effect will irreparably tear apart the country's social fabric and increase the divide between poor and wealthy Americans. For academic and most medium and large public libraries. From Booklist
Katz is a premier social historian of U.S. public policy, with a focus on welfare and education policy. After sketching "The Invention of Welfare" in the American context, Katz describes the combination of programs--social insurance, employee benefits, and the much-maligned "welfare"--that constituted "The American Welfare State" as of 1980. He then examines how that structure has changed, discussing the changing American city; the Family Support Act of 1986; "Governors as Welfare Reformers"; deficits as a guarantor of austerity; privatization of government functions; and the "end of paternalism" in employer-sponsored benefit plans. (He also explores changes in workers' compensation, disability and unemployment insurance, Social Security, health care, and the few remaining "poverty programs.") For Katz, these changes, capped by elimination of "welfare as we know it" in 1996, "signaled the victory of three great forces--the war on dependence, the devolution of public authority, and the application of market models to public policy." Together, these forces are narrowing and devaluing citizenship and pushing unemployed and underemployed Americans to the margins of our democracy. Mary Carroll

The best book yet on the fate of welfare
By pnotley@hotmail.com
Michael Katz's monograph on the end of AFDC and the rise of market systems as the preferred solution to everything is not the wittiest and most readable book one could have on the subject. Nor is it the most passionate. But it is thoroughly documented and it manifestly shows how the attack on the welfare state in the nineties has increased inequality and decreased security for most Americans. Katz starts off with a fine description of poverty and inequality in the modern American city. He emphasizes, as others have, the very generous government and public support for suburbia at the expense of the inner city, especially in transport and housing. Suburbia's most privileged and coddled residents then turned around to denounce any welfare and assistance to people not like themselves as the most horrendous abuse imaginable of taxpayer funds. More, I think, could have been said about the rise of the conservative ascendency, particularly the weakness of the Democratic Party and trade unions to serve or to mobilize any liberal alternative.
Katz then goes on to provide useful and informative chapters on governors as welfare reformers, mayors as welfare reformers, the limits of private charity, the decline of employer benefits, increased risks for the injured and disabled and unemployed, "reform" of social security, new market models for health care, the fate of food stamps and legal services and the end of welfare. Each chapter is useful and will be very illuminating for those who only read The New Republic. Consider the case of John Engler's welfare reform, which boasted of its removal of people from the welfare rolls and their placement in paying employment. But how much of this was the result of the reforms and how much was it that of a booming economy? A study found that when compared to a control group, Engler's programs had increased adult employment by only 2.4%. And in Detroit 60% of children under five still lived in poverty in 1996. The even more hyped case of Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin (now the Secretary in charge of getting hysterical over anthrax) is even more convincingly deflated. Thompson's Learnfare, a program of denying benefits to families whose children do not attend school, certainly seemed tough and punitive, but even state agencies agreed it hadn't actually increased school attendance. It may appear encouraging that from 1987-1995 Wisconsin's AFDC payroll dropped by a nearly a quarter. But 75% of that decline occured in his first term, before his plans had time to take effect. The centrist Democratic mayor of Philadelphia has been much praised, but the city was still losing people and perhaps 27% of the population was below the poverty line. Privitization in Indianopolis actualy increased long-term debt, while taxes rose and homicides beat new records in 1994 and 1997.
Empowerment zones are also deflated: "In June 1999 the Philadelphia empowerment zone reported that it had helped businesses create four hundred jobs, but it could not say whether the jobs already existed or were projected for the future." Private charities have never, Katz points out, cared for most of America's needy. Many private charities depend on government funds for their work, and much of charity goes to religious denominations, as opposed to poor per se. The distinction can be seen in 1994 when the governor of Mississippi asked the states' 5,500 churches to adapt a needy family, only 15 followed through. We then move to the steady evisceration of company benefits, along with attempts to gut workmen's compensation and unemployment insurance.
Katz is good at pointing out the flaws in conservative attacks on welfare. He discusses the 1995 campaign against disability benefits, which relied on anecdotal evidence, despite four major studies that found no evidence of widespread fraud or abuse. A hotline to report fraud found only 83 serious cases out of a million eligible children. Katz also discusses the conservative panic over social security, such as how their vaunted "Chilean" model has high administrative costs and in 1995 was actually losing money. The Enron debacle only vindicates Katz's criticisms. Katz also details the failure of for-profit hospitals, with their own habits of "waste, fraud and abuse," and the debacle that is managed care. He notes how legal services in the United States receives only a fraction of the money alloted to it in Ontario and Britain. He deflates conservative propaganda that AFDC causes illegitimacy (if so, why is single parenting rising when the value of AFDC benefits had been dropping for decades?) He notes that welfare reform has proven more successful at reducing rolls than reducing poverty, and there has a been a noted reluctance for people to research how those thrown off rolls are doing. (Reports that 50% of ex-recepients have found jobs are not all that different from statistics in the eighties) By the end of the book Katz has clearly shown that we now live in a world where the price of citizenship is paid by those who can least afford it, as they are governed by men (and occasionally women) who believe that sacrifices are something that only other people do.

FINALLY, an objective book about welfare in the US.
By F_Luciano
Katz is a historian on welfare in the United States. This book is a history book about welfare. It is a very balanced and objective book, because the author tends to NOT write any of his own opinions, and instead, just uses the opinions of others. This is a good thing for 2 reasons: (1). You aren't as likely to be getting the author's bias meshed in with the writings (2). You get a BETTER historical view of welfare, and the different sides.
Now, I'm not sure if Katz is a liberal. He doesn't really ever go into what he thinks, or what his views are on the different issues of welfare. What I am sure is that he presents BOTH SIDES of the debate on welfare. Not only do you get to read the opinions of the liberals who are for welfare, but you get to read all the opinions of conservatives against it. This is how historical books are supposed to be presented, and this is how Katz' Price of Citizenship is presented. The reviewer below who talks about Katz making all these liberal assumptions obviously didn't read the book. Katz opinions in the matter are absent in the book. The ONLY case you could make about Katz creating a libral-bias side FOR welfare is by saying he gives more credence to liberal views than conservative views by presenting more, or better written liberal views than conservative views. Well, I didn't notice any such thing at all.
Now, I'm not going to pretend like this book doesn't seem to hint at giving any sort of credence to a political ideology. Its conclusions do seem to give more credence to the liberal side of the welfare debate than the conservative one. But is that because the author is creating biased arguments in favor of liberal positions? Nope. Read the book. You'll be amazed how objective this book is considering it deals with such an emotional, hot political topic. You know, sometimes, one side of the political spectrum may have more truth in its favor than the other side. When presenting these truths, this hardly counts as bias, or rhetoric. Its been my experience that neither political side (liberal or conservative) has a monopoly on the truth. Sometimes, when you take an objective look at a certain issue, and examine ALL the facts, one side is going to come out ahead. Thats just life. THere's no liberal or conservative conspiracy going on.
For those of you who've read Charle's Murray's Losing Ground (which I have), it is HARDLY a liberal equivalent. There is a surprisingly absense of political rhetoric, or emotional arguments in this book. It is truly a perfect example of how one CAN ACTUALLY learn some real truths about a political topic that has biased rhetoric from both sides of the political spectrum.
If you really want to learn something about welfare, and the recent history of welfare (i.e. welfare in the 90's) and all the recent debates about it, then read this book. Read it ESPECIALLY if you are like me, and are tired of reading countless partisan books from both sides time and time again when researching political topics.

By Panopticonman
With "The Price of Citizenship," Katz performs a much needed demystification of the ways in which the social welfare state and the poor have been attacked and continue to be attacked by social and fiscal conservatives under the guise of consumer choice and the chimerical promise of the marketplace as the best of all possible ways to administer "welfare." A work of breathtaking scope, Katz examines each of the programs of the welfare state -- Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance, AFDC ("welfare"), Public Eduation, etc. -- gives a brief history of the inception of each, and then gives a recent history of how each program has come under attack by the forces of business and and their shortsighted friends in government.
Here's how they do it, according to Katz: Using the same master narratives of sorting citizens into deserving and undeserving categories to begin the assault, then tightening the screws on the "undeserving," the conservative business forces follow up with the panacea of the marketplace as the be-all and end-all solution: get those lazy minority mothers off the dole and into jobs; close down the loopholes in unemployment so that no one will qualify; drive people slowly toward the assumption of more and more risk by scaring them with junk statistics on the imminent demise of Social Security and then offering them the "solution" of mutual funds -- etc., etc., etc. The strategy is always the same: the market will knit up the ravell'd sleeve of care, when in fact it really serves to unravel the social safety net for those who need it most, and, weaves new money-making nets for others in the name of "efficiency" and "choice." These special stronger nets are the new welfare schemes for corporations and the upper and upper middle class.
One of the finest chapters deals with underhanded manipulation by conservatives of the public with regard to viability of Social Security. Katz convincingly shows that Social Security is not in any danger of going bankrupt -- period. He shows how the forces arrayed against Social Security, through misinformation, through the politics of playing younger workers against older workers, has managed to convince most Americans that they will either not recieve their benefits or recieved reduced benefits. Indeed, until I read this chapter, I was one sheep among the many. He then goes on to show how the various "choice" schemes proposed to "fix" Social Security through investment in the stockmarket -- either individually or collectively -- would serve to make financial companies billions and billions of dollars. In every chapter, Katz follows the money, and, sadly it usually leads to the ultra-right think tanks whose clients most stand to profit from the privatization of government social welfare programs.
It may sound by this review that "The Price of Citizenship" is a muckraking screed. Or that it was written by a conspiracy nut. It is neither. Instead it is a deeply researched work that convinces through facts as well as through narrative that the forces of the marketplace through the instrument of the ideology of the market as espoused by the right wing have been successful in undermining the foundations of U.S. social welfare programs (which frankly weren't much to begin with). Katz never uses invective -- the strongest word he uses is "underhanded" in his description of the scuttling of Clinton's health plan by business and medical interests -- instead he marshalls facts, questions assumptions, and draw important parallels and connections between the assaults on all of these programs. After reading this book, you'll be more than prepared to do some debunking of the conventional wisdom about Social Security, "Workfare" programs, HMOs, etc. May I dare say Katz has done us all, and even his country, a noble service by putting the lie to the master lie of the marketplace as the best solution for what ails us. Voucher this, baby!

The First America: The Spanish Monarchy, Creole Patriots and the Liberal State 1492-1866, by D. A. Brading

The Spanish conquest of America generated a profusion of chronicles, tracts and poetry, among which are figured several classics of the Renaissance. It also provoked a fierce debate between Bartolome de las Casas, who defended the Indians, and the humanist historians who glorified the conquerors. Thereafter, imperial jurists and churchmen acclaimed the Spanish monarchy as chosen by Divine Providence to establish a Catholic empire in the New World. Within the bounds of this universal monarchy, American Spaniards sought to define their social identity by installing Aztec and Inca civilisation as the historical foundations of their countries and by accepting Our Lady of Guadalupe and St Rosa of Lima as their patrons. When the voice of the Enlightenment re-stated the imperial critique of the New World's inhabitants, Creole patriots vigorously responded; and if in South America Simon Bolivar cited classical republicanism to justify independence, in Mexico Creole patriotism was transmuted into an insurgent nationalism that did not succumb to liberal ideas until the incursion of the reform movement led by Benito Juarez. This book is about the quest of Spaniards born in the New World to define their American identity. It demonstrates that across the three centuries of colonial rule, Creole patriots succeeded in creating an intellectual and political tradition that by reason of its engagement with native history and American reality was idiosyncratic, regionally diverse, and distinct from any European model.

'Such a short summary of a book elaborating over nearly 700 pages of finely printed text cannot hope to do it justice. Brading offers a study of impressive scope, rich content and suggestive argument, filled with incisive essays on all the major thinkers and commentators on colonial Spanish America ... it is a major addition to the historiography of the Hispanic world and will undoubtedly become a standard work of reference for anybody interested in the foundations of Hispanic American intellectual life.' The Rocky Road to the Great War: The Evolution of Trench Warfare to 1914, by Nicholas Murray

Nicholas Murray’s The Rocky Road to the Great War examines the evolution of field fortification theory and practice between 1877 and 1914. The technical and intellectual developments during this period were critical to the nature of the First World War. It is well known that the technology of the defensive (machine guns, barbed wire, and artillery) had become much more powerful in the decades prior to 1914. The challenge this combination of enhanced defensive technology presented to the offensive is familiar to us today. What is less well known is the evolution in the design of field fortifications, from above to below ground, which massively enhanced the power of the new defensive technology. Study of the evolution of field fortification construction has largely been neglected despite the fact that the battlefield landscape of the First World War, indeed industrial warfare in the twentieth century, owes its existence to the changes that occurred therein. It was the combination of new technology and new types of field fortification that was to reach a bloody dénouement in the Great War.Based largely on primary sources―including French, British, Austrian, and American military attaché reports―Murray’s enlightening study is unique in defining, fully examining, and contextualizing the theories and construction of field fortifications before World War I.

Review
"You must read his book. You won't find better on the topic." Professor Dennis Showalter

"Nicholas Murray has carried out research in archives in London, Paris, Vienna, and the United States, and he has ransacked the professional literature of a reflective and deeply committed generation of soldiers. He has filled a massive gap in the history of war. All those who study it are in his debt." Sir Hew Strachan, CSTPV Professorial Fellow,  St. Andrew's University

"Murray has delivered an important work, taking us beyond the usual stereotypical treatments of the run-up to Armageddon. The volume is an important addition to a growing body of scholarship that contextualizes the Great War."—Gary P. Cox, Journal of Military History (Gary P. Cox Journal of Military History)

"This is essential reading for those interested in the events of the early weeks of World War I."—A. A. Nofi, StrategyPage (A. A. Nofi StrategyPage)

"Rocky Road is an excellent account of the technical and theoretical evolution of trench warfare. It is essential to the history of WWI because it illustrates that the combatants did not merely burrow into the ground in the fall of 1914. Instead they took advantage of what they had learned by observation or by experience in the years before the war."—Col. Gregory Fornenot (ret.), Military Review (Military Review Col. Gregory Fornenot (ret.))

"[I]nvaluable in contextualizing the use of trench warfare in World War I."—Army Magazine (Army Magazine)

From the Author
I first became curious about the subject of field fortification whilst digging a shell scrape on a Territorial Army exercise. The problem I had with the design of the hole I was digging was its shape: which did not seem to me to provide more than superficial protection against even our fictional enemy. As I was doing a degree at the time, I started research on the topic. This eventually combined with an interest in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, whereupon I noticed something about the physical shape of the trenches at the siege of Plevna. They looked like the modern ones I had expected to be digging. That is, like the ones I had seen photographs of in books about the First World War. The more I looked into the topic, the more this stuck out. I was interested in the US Civil War and I had seen pictures of fortifications there, but they did not look like the trenches from the First World War either. Thus, I came to the question of why. The rest of this story stems from there.

Much of the material in the book comes from the French, Austrian, US, and British archives, as well as the doctrinal manuals and contemporary military journals. In addition, I traveled to the sites of a number of battles where field fortification played a prominent role in order to study the physical nature of the ground itself.

Sets a new and higher standard
By Mark Hull
The historical literature about the First World War is vast – beyond counting, perhaps; there are biographies, campaign studies, unit histories, personal narratives, books for specialists written by specialists, broad overviews that necessarily rely on generalities (and not a few myths), while others promise to capture lessons learned from 1914-1918 for modern military application. For perhaps the first time, we now have a painstakingly researched and highly readable history that is not a subjective and distilled version of what we should learn but rather on what the pre-WWI militaries actually learned and believed they knew when that war began.

Murray presents a sound case which draws heavily (and for the first time) on the military attaché reports from what are today little-studied conflicts: The Russo-Turkish War, the 2nd Boer War, The Russo-Japanese War, and the Balkan Wars. Officers from every major nation were present to witness, report, and draw informed conclusions from what they experienced – in a sense, to recognize trends that would impact their country’s ability to make war. The book follows a central theme – the constant interplay between entrenchment and firepower, as so accurately communicated by those attachés, propelled the Great Powers down a path which ultimately led to the stalemate on the Western Front – and eventually to the firepower breakthroughs which resolved the same problem.

Modern war made entrenchment necessary. Developments in chemistry and metallurgy produced more accurate and lethal small arms and artillery, and protection from those weapons – while still attempting to keep tactical and operational initiative - was the obvious counter. While the nature and design of the entrenchments varied due to geography, climate, number of combatants, technology, military culture, etc. they were an integral part of what military commanders anticipated by 1914. That said, the offensive-minded leaders never let go of the idea that the fixed-bayonet spirit of the offensive could still produce decisive results (demonstrated time after time by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War), but accepted that for offensive operations to succeed, they must be accompanied by devastating and accurate bombardment. On the other hand, empirical evidence also showed that a well-fortified position would make the defenders almost impervious to all but the most lethal artillery. The leaders never completely resolved this obvious paradox.

Murray seems to appreciate that any good history must first be a good story; he’s an able storyteller who does not sacrifice narrative for trivia. For anyone even tangentially interested in the larger topic, this is simply a fun read. He writes with humor and with an obvious mastery of the multi-lingual sources; his analysis and conclusions are unfailingly logical. Most of all, what he writes is important and should shape the way that WWI is understood – not from our distanced and jaundiced perspective but instead as a window to the minds and methods of those who had every reason to believe that their war would be short and decisive, and that they had correctly described the shape of things to come. As Murray notes, “Perhaps the military officers of the day simply learned the lessons too well.”

An Insightful Look at the Origins of Trench Warfare
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Prof. Murray (Leavenworth) opens with a reminder that field fortifications are an age-old feature of war, especially in sieges or where terrain favored their use. But from the mid-eighteenth century they began to become more common, as gunpowder almost totally dominated the battlefield and as armies grew ever larger, which tended to reduce maneuvering room. He then examines the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), and the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), with an appendix on the American Civil War (1861-1865). Each war began with field operations, but the combination of modern firepower and, in most cases, larger and larger armies, soon led to the development of extensive field fortifications, i.e., trench lines. Murray’s final chapter, “The State of Military Thinking in 1914” examines what the various European armies thought war would be like. Reviewing recent history, they believed that if the war could be won quickly during the opening phase of field operations, trench warfare could be avoided. They were wrong, of course, as the armies of 1914 were so large, there was almost literally not enough maneuvering room. All armeis soon resorted to increasingly elaborate field fortifications, greatly reducing casualties, but then spent the most of the next four years trying to figure out how to break the stalemate. This is essential reading for those interested in the events of the early weeks of World War I.'

The logic of trench warfare
By Chris Pringle
As we approach August 2014, the generals of 100 years ago can expect renewed criticism of their stupidity, both for creating trench lines and for attacking them. Although by no means unchallenged, the popular view of the First World War typically favours the "lions led by donkeys" caricature, according to which out-of-touch commanders mindlessly sacrificed their men's lives in futile battles.

Dr Murray provides evidence to support a contrary view. In the half-century prior to 1914, developments in weaponry led to widespread use of ever more sophisticated field fortifications. Several major wars in that period offered plentiful opportunities for European armies to observe how these technological changes adjusted the firepower-protection-mobility equation and consequently affected battlefield tactics. The conclusions they drew influenced military thinking and were reflected in official doctrine and training. As professional soldiers, the generals of 1914 were taught by the lessons learned from the preceding conflicts.

What were those lessons? Dr Murray convincingly explains how, of the numerous functions performed by field fortification, protection and force multiplication became especially important. He describes technical changes in fortification in response to improved artillery, such as digging in deeper, overhead cover and greater emphasis on concealment. In the face of modern firepower, constructing extensive trench systems was entirely sensible.

A key point made by Dr Murray is this: "Despite all of the improvements to the defense, the strategic aggressor was victorious in all of the wars studied." In other words, it was still possible for the strategic offensive to win, or indeed - it could even be concluded by our scientific professional soldiers of 1914 - victory was only possible through strategic offensive. Their faith in the attack was therefore founded on reason, and however flawed the conduct of individual operations may have been in practice, the principle was ultimately vindicated by the well-executed and victorious offensives of 1918.

The author has drawn heavily on primary sources such as field service regulations, contemporary military manuals and military attaché reports. The work is well illustrated with plentiful photographs and pleasingly clear maps and diagrams. His analysis is thorough, systematic and persuasively argued, with a light touch that makes his book readable without sacrificing rigour. As Professor Strachan says in his foreword, Dr Murray "has filled a massive gap in the history of war".

This book is invaluable reading for anyone wishing to understand why the trench warfare of the First World War took the shape that it did, and is recommended for any reader interested in the major wars of the later nineteenth century or in the First World War.

An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir

Set in a terrifyingly brutal Rome-like world, An Ember in the Ashes is an epic fantasy debut about an orphan fighting for her family and a soldier fighting for his freedom. It’s a story that’s literally burning to be told.

LAIA is a Scholar living under the iron-fisted rule of the Martial Empire. When her brother is arrested for treason, Laia goes undercover as a slave at the empire’s greatest military academy in exchange for assistance from rebel Scholars who claim that they will help to save her brother from execution.

ELIAS is the academy’s finest soldier— and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias is considering deserting the military, but before he can, he’s ordered to participate in a ruthless contest to choose the next Martial emperor.

When Laia and Elias’s paths cross at the academy, they find that their destinies are more intertwined than either could have imagined and that their choices will change the future of the empire itself.

Everything I love about YA Fantasy
By Karen Blue
This is what YA Fantasy should read like. An Ember in the Ashes had everything I love about YA in one fantastically gripping book. It had a dystopian society, it had a wondrous world, it had heartbreak and angst, it had strength and cunning, it had a swoon worthy romance, and a bit of paranormal sprinkled throughout.

Two protagonists, Two story lines. I wasn’t sure when they would connect, but when they did it was magical.

Laia’s home was just invaded by the Masks. They took her brother and killed her grandparents. Her parents are long dead after being caught and killed as rebels to the empire. Laia is on the run and catches up with the rebels to see if they could free her brother. They strike a deal and all Laia has to do is spy on the Commandant to get information. Her servitude to the Commandant is heartbreaking. Will she get enough info before getting herself killed in order to save her brother?
Elias has just graduated. His next mission is to go into the trials. He will fight to become the emperor, the emperor’s second, like his mother before him, or die trying. He hates it. He is thinking of leaving. He is so disillusioned by the empire, he just wants to desert. He is caught the night before by his mentor, Cain. Forced to go through the trials, he discovers more about himself then he thought possible.

Each story is gripping.

Laia is a fantastic heroine. She is “normal” and very conflicted. She is beautiful and driven. She is tortured in this book and then she gets to interact with Elias. ELIAS! *sigh* I need a heroine like that. He is strong and damaged. He has a conscience and wants more for his world. He goes for the girl most likely to be complicated. They were both very developed characters. We also get a good look at their motivation. Even the secondary characters had great appeal and stories of their own. We get so much out of each person and they don’t exist just to move Elias and Laia together. Nothing is easy for these two and I loved that things don’t just magically fall into place for them. This ship is complicated. I still ship them both so hard.

The world building in this book was fantastic. We get to see an ancient Rome in all its treachery through a fictional mask. Speaking of masks, their is a whole militia of them to enforce the Emperor’s rule, and Elias is the front runner in a trial for the power to rule the empire. The trials are brutal and heart wrenching. This world is full of brutality. There is child abuse and abandonment, slavery, and rape. Despite all of the dangerous aspects of this world there is this underlying feeling of hope throughout the story.

It is hard for me to write a review about this book since I loved it so much. This book destroyed me. I thought I knew good writing, I was wrong. Considering An Ember in the Ashes was a debut book, I was expecting so much less. I am blown away. Bring on the sequel.

*BAM*
By FlyingFish
So this book is complete awesomeness. The story is in the POV of Laia and Elias. Laia is a normal girl, living in a conquered kingdom, the only skills she has are those she learned helping her grandparents try to make a living (housework, cooking, and healing). Early on in the story Laias' family is attacked and she makes a choice regarding her own freedom that haunts her to the point of destruction before she squares her shoulders and not only takes responsibility but works towards redemption. Elias is on the opposite end of the ability spectrum, he has more skill (fighting, weaponry, stealth, survival) than any human has a right, but is struggling with his conscious and the mental detachment the Martials demand of him. As more dilemmas arise, he chooses to become better, to not shred his soul and is forced to deal with the inevitable aftermath.

Besides the insane character growth, I loved the characters themselves. They were REAL, they laughed, cried, they showed fear and uncertainty, there was no swaggering protagonist that stayed 18 steps ahead of everyone else and ran her mouth. Thank goodness. The heroine and hero were relatable, quirky, and made logical decisions. I take that back, I liked MOST of the characters, the antagonists, were perhaps a little cliched, complete with dead, cold eyes and monologuing. This book overall was a fantastic read, the situations are safe (clean) enough for all young adult readers and honestly it was inspiring. After reading this, I'm certainly excited for the sequel, but I feel like if I set a goal, I could accomplish it, and that's a feeling we could all use a little more of. Happy reading.

Author Sabaa Tahir's AN EMBER IN THE ASHES reminds us why we have to always keep the faith
By Cyrus Webb
When all hope seems to be lost will you be able to keep the faith, trust your gut and survive?

That is just one of the questions that author Sabaa Tahir poses in the powerful novel AN EMBER IN THE ASHES. We meet Laia, a girl who we are able to see transform as the book progresses from someone who doubts the power within into someone who learns to embrace it.

This is a book about survival, family and what it takes to keep going with all odds seemingly against you. It's hard not to read this book and be inspired, especially because it is written in first person, allowing the reader to take the treacherous journey along with our unlikely heroine and her unlikely hero Elias.

If you are looking for a book that not only reminds you of the importance of never giving up and the reward for staying the course, then this is one you definitely want to add to your reading list.

from Hilltop to Mountaintop: The Life & Legacy of one Iwo Jima Flag Raiser, by Ron Elliott

The image of the U.S. Marines raising the Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima may very well be the most famous photograph of all time. While Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal s iconic picture captured in the final stages of World War II fuses the men into a single historic unit, they remain six individuals and each was an American woman s precious baby boy. From an overall historical viewpoint, given that what we see in the photograph is American teamwork, courage and victory, the individual identities may not matter; nonetheless each of the six men has a unique background and traveled a distinctive path to reach the summit of Mt. Suribachi. Through exhaustive research into sources public and private, Ron Elliott has detailed the heart-warming and heart-wrenching drama that is the life and legacy of one of the flag raisers, Franklin Runyon Sousley. Sousley s story is related with all the tragedy, humor and excitement that compose the remarkable life of one chosen by fate to be representative of the thousands of Americans who sacrificed so much to preserve our way of life.

Review
A mere 1/400th of a second captured Franklin s legacy which endures in bronze, at the Marine Corps War Memorial, a tribute to the Marine dead of all wars since 10 Nov 1775. As long as the American flag proudly flies above the most cherished of America s icons, the memory and sacrifice of Franklin and thousands like him will not be forgotten. --James Jim Donovan Executive Director, Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation

Sousley's heroism as a Marine has been documented in books and film, but now Ron Elliott sheds light on Sousley's formative years and how it impacted his time in the service and his family members as well as the nation after his death. --Maysville Independent Ledger

Whatever transpired to cause the miracle of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, no one can dispute the power it still brings today... the image of boys like Franklin Sousley, a farm boy from small town Kentucky, who by no will of his own, helped to encourage and capture the spirit of America. --Heather French Henry, Miss America 2000 Executive Director, The Heather French Foundation for Veterans, Inc.

A Kentucky Hero
By KyPhoto
Noted Kentucky author Ron Elliott has proven himself to be an excellent researcher and storyteller in his previous books, including "Inside the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire," "Assassination at the Statehouse," "The Silent Brigade" and "Through the Eyes of Lincoln." These talents shine once more as he chronicles the life of Kentuckian Franklin Sousley who was one of six marines immortalized in a photo of the raising of an American Flag on Iwo Jima, an island in the Pacific Ocean, near the end of World War II. The book follows Sousley as he goes through childhood, high school, Marine Corp boot camp and to his eventual death on Iwo Jima.

The author grew up in a small Kentucky community not unlike Sousley's. With his first-hand knowledge of rural Kentucky life, Elliott crafts a realistic account of Sousley's life and surroundings. You'll laugh at Sousley's mischievous antics as a young man, you'll feel you're right there with him in boot camp and on Iwo Jima, and you'll likely shed tears as you read his mother's reaction to the news of her son's death. The book is both heart warming and heart wrenching. Be prepared to read it in one sitting; you won't want to put it down!

One young mans life changed forever.
By Peg
This is about the story of Franklin Sousley, one of the men that is pictured in the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. His life story at such a young age, from a really small town in KY. Actually he was my third cousin if cousins go back that far. I just remember my dad telling me about who he was and when this book came out I couldn't wait to read about him. He is buried in Elizaville Cemetery, where my grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and cousin are buried.
If you enjoy history I believe you would enjoy reading about this country boy who fought for America.

By Kellie The Book Lady
From Hilltop to Mountaintop: The Life and Legacy of One Iwo Jima Flag Raiser may be the best book I have read this year. I sat down and read it from cover to cover in about 3 hours. Ron Elliot makes Franklin R. Sousley come alive in his account of Sousley's early life and the 31 days Sousley spent on Iwo Jima. I will never look at the picture of the Iwo Jima flag raising again without thinking of Sousely and all the heroic efforts of the soldiers who fight for our country in a war.
