About the Author

Beth M. Schwartz is the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Professor of Psychology at Heidelberg University, in Tiffin, Ohio. She was on the faculty at Randolph College, in Lynchburg, VA for 24 years, where she was the William E. and Catherine Ehrman Thoresen ‘23 Professor of Psychology and Assistant Dean of the College. She received a BA at Colby College (Maine) and a PhD in cognitive psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her scholarship focuses on two areas of interest: (a) children’s memory development and how this applies to children’s eyewitness reports and (b) the scholarship of teaching and learning/pedagogical research. In addition to numerous professional presentations at conferences, she has published many book chapters and articles in a variety of scholarly journals, including the Journal of Higher Education, Ethics and Behavior, Law and Human Behavior, and Applied Developmental Science. She has also edited and coauthored books, including Child Abuse: A Global View (Schwartz, McCauley, & Epstein, 2001), Optimizing Teaching and Learning (Gurung & Schwartz, 2012), and Evidence-Based Teaching for Higher Education (Schwartz & Gurung, 2012). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Psychological Society and is a Fellow of Division 2 of APA (Society for the Teaching of Psychology). She was an award-winning teacher at Randolph College, where she taught Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, Cognitive Psychology, and the capstone course. She received the Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring from the American Psych-Law Society, the Gillie A. Larew Award for Distinguished Teaching at Randolph College, the Katherine Graves Davidson Excellence in Scholarship Award from Randolph College, and the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Certificate from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

 

R. Eric Landrum is a professor of psychology at Boise State University, receiving his PhD in cognitive psychology from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His research interests center on the educational conditions that best facilitate student success as well as the use of scholarship of teaching and learning strategies to advance the efforts of scientist-educators. He has more than 375 professional presentations at conferences, published over 45 books/book chapters, and has published more than 90 professional articles in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. He has worked with more than 300 undergraduate research assistants and taught more than 14,000 students in 23 years at Boise State. During Summer 2008, he led an American Psychological Association working group at the National Conference for Undergraduate Education in Psychology studying the desired results of an undergraduate psychology education. During the October 2014 Educational Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, Eric was presented with a Presidential Citation from then APA President Nadine Kaslow for his outstanding contributions to the teaching of psychology. Eric is the lead author of The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success (5th ed., 2013) and has authored Undergraduate Writing in Psychology: Learning to Tell the Scientific Story (2nd ed., 2012) and Finding a Job With a Psychology Bachelor’s Degree: Expert Advice for Launching Your Career (2009). He coauthored You’ve Received Your Doctorate in Psychology―Now What? (2012), is the lead editor for Teaching Ethically―Challenges and Opportunities (2012), and coeditor of Assessing Teaching and Learning in Psychology: Current and Future Perspectives (2013). He and Regan Gurung are the inaugural coeditors of the APA journal Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology. He served as vice president for the Rocky Mountain region of Psi Chi (2009–2011). He is a member of the American Psychological Association, a fellow in APA’s Division Two (Society for the Teaching of Psychology or STP), served as STP secretary (2009–2011), and served as the 2014 STP president. He will serve as the 2015–2016 president of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association.

Regan A. R. Gurung is the Ben J. and Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Human Development and Psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay (UWGB). He received a BA at Carleton College (Minnesota) and a PhD at the University of Washington. He then spent 3 years at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published articles in a variety of scholarly journals, including Psychological Review and Teaching of Psychology. He has a textbook, Health Psychology: A Cultural Approach (now in its third edition), and has coauthored/edited 12 other books, including Doing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (Gurung & Wilson, 2012); Exploring Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind (Gurung, Chick, & Haynie, 2009); Getting Culture (Gurung & Prieto, 2009); and Optimizing Teaching and Learning (Gurung & Schwartz, 2012). He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Midwestern Psychological Association and a winner of the Founder’s Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as of the Founder’s Award for Scholarship at UWGB. He was also the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Wisconsin Professor of the Year (2009) and the UW System Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award Winner. He is past president of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. He is founding coeditor of the APA journal, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology.

Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses) tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity, sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal cages and sheds. Using Antonina's diaries, other contemporary sources and her own research in Poland, Ackerman takes us into the Warsaw ghetto and the 1943 Jewish uprising and also describes the Poles' revolt against the Nazi occupiers in 1944. She introduces us to such varied figures as Lutz Heck, the duplicitous head of the Berlin zoo; Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, spiritual head of the ghetto; and the leaders of Zegota, the Polish organization that rescued Jews. Ackerman reveals other rescuers, like Dr. Mada Walter, who helped many Jews pass, giving lessons on how to appear Aryan and not attract notice. Ackerman's writing is viscerally evocative, as in her description of the effects of the German bombing of the zoo area: ...the sky broke open and whistling fire hurtled down, cages exploded, moats rained upward, iron bars squealed as they wrenched apart. The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman is the historical narrative of Christian Polish zookeepers, Jan Zabinski, a trained zoologist and the director of the Warsaw zoo, and his wife, Antonina. Taken primarily from the memoirs, diaries, and autobiographical children’s books of Antonina, Ackerman has produced a book that squarely faces the horror of Hitler’s plans to destroy every aspect of Poland’s multi-faceted identity. Within this crucible of malevolence, the Zabinskis took great risks to save hundreds of Jews during World War II. The author chose to write about the Zabinskis to honor their great heroism during the Nazi regime in Poland “…when even handing a thirsty Jew a cup of water was punishable by death.” Although the action of the story is carried out primarily through Jan, the lens through which we view the action is Antonina’s.
Starting in 1931 the Zabinskis lived in a villa in Praga, just outside Warsaw, not far from the zoo. At their villa they kept a number of injured or orphaned zoo animals and allowed the creatures to roam freely about their residence. This was not simply a necessity due to the care that some of the animals required, it was a scientific approach for Jan. Ackerman records this comment by Jan: “It’s not enough to do research from a distance. It’s by living beside animals that you learn their behaviors and psychology.” As for Antonina, this was a lifestyle that she also relished. An “animal whisperer” before anyone heard of the term, Antonina had, according to her husband’s notes, had an “uncanny ability to calm unruly animals.”
From their home in Praga the Zabinskis could see the rooftops of the Old Town of Warsaw. Just outside the Old Town lay the large Jewish Quarter with a population of about 300,000 Jews, which, says Ackerman, was “the heartbeat of eastern European Jewish culture.” The Jews who lived in the Jewish Quarter maintained their own style of dress, culture, language and religion and many spoke no Polish, according to Ackerman.
Rumors of war were everywhere in Warsaw in the summer of 1939, and they proved to be prophetic. On September 1, Hitler invaded Poland. On September 7, forty-two year old Jan was formally ordered to join the Polish army at the front, and all civilians were directed to vacate the zoo at once. Antonina took their young son, Rys, and sought refuge where she could in Warsaw as the Germans began 1,150 bombing sorties over the city.
During the bombings, concerns about the animals eventually caused Antonina and a few keepers to go to the zoo to assess the damage, which they found to be extensive. Many animals were killed and buildings were destroyed by bullets, bombs and fire. Some animals escaped and entered the Old Town while Warsaw was in flames. “People brave enough to stand by their windows…watched a biblical hallucination unfolding as the zoo emptied into Warsaw streets,” writes Ackerman.
Poland soon surrendered to Hitler and what was left of Jan’s military contingent left the front to return to their homes. In an astonishing story that verges on the miraculous, Jan was reunited with Antonina and Rys at his sister’s apartment in Warsaw. After a brief stay in the city the little family walked back to their damaged villa to resume caring for the zoo and its remaining animals.
Ackerman writes that “Under the Third Reich, animals became noble, mythic, almost angelic — including humans of course, but not Slavs, Gypsies, Catholics or Jews.” Laws were soon in place for the elimination of these “sub-human” specimens. As Hitler’s plans for the destruction of Poland and its people unfolded, the liquidation of the Warsaw zoo also became a reality. Though devastated by the Reich’s decision, Jan saw an opportunity and convinced director Lutz Heck, a powerful Nazi leader and a zoologist, to use the old zoo buildings as a large pig farm. Ackerman records this: “According to testimony [Jan] gave to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, by using the ruse of gathering scraps for feeding pigs, he hoped to ‘bring notes, bacon, and butter and carry messages for friends in the Ghetto.” This was only one of the ways that the Zabinskis helped the Jews during the war.
Other resistance activities included the incredible risk of hiding an ammunition dump for the Polish Home Army in the middle of the zoo. About this, Ackerman writes: “As Jan thought, it never occurred to the Germans that a Pole would be that gutsy, because they regarded Slavs as a fainthearted and stupid race fit only for physical labor.”
When it came to hiding refugees, the zoo was by no means the ideal location says Ackerman. “The villa stood close to Ratuszowa Street, right out in the open like a lighthouse, surrounded only by cages and habitats.” But the Zabinskis took in many “guests,” approximately three hundred, whom they hid either in the villa or on the zoo’s property as the refugees passed through to their final destinations.
Why did the Zabinskis take the tremendous risk of rescuing Jews during the war? Ackerman has this answer from an interview conducted with Jan by reporter Noah Kliger of the Israeli newspaper, Yediot Aharonot: “I only did my duty — if you can save somebody’s life, it’s your duty to try.”

But the "story" is interspersed with long quotes and stories about various Jewish "Guests" of the zoo which traversed past and future. It jumped around so much with quotes and facts thrown in with wanton disregard, that the story was lost and struggled to even be about poor Antonina. It could've been a great historical novel (or a novel of great historical significance) but the author used so much original material that it resembled a poorly thrown together thesis. The quiet perspective of Antonina's life during Warsaw's horrible destruction was quite lost despite much of the material coming from her diary. I persevered to the end and enjoyed a few brief sentences about Rys, her son and Teresa, her daughter after the war.

Worth reading

This Book was very hard to get into, I wanted to give up reading it many times. However, all of the rich and amazing stories kept me going. When I reached the end of the book I felt much more educated on what happened in Poland. I also found myself discussing the book with many people. I really felt compassion for the people,and what they endured. I only gave it three stars because it was such a hard book to get through.

In the last decade of the 1800s, lynching, mob violence, and segregation were well-entrenched responses to the American "race problem." Rising up in spirited defense, black women launched several regional organizations designed to defend and improve the rights of their race and their place within it. Yet the creed of betterment espoused by many black club women overlay sometimes-bitter commentary on black men for their failures as supporters and protectors. It also castigated lower-class "sisters" whose oft-caricatured mores cast a shadow on their own. And it had a rocky relationship with the broader American feminist movement: "Since they could not control white men, the source of most of their woes," historian Deborah Gray White says, "and since they believed that a race could rise no higher than its women, they had to begin that elevation with the women themselves." Too Heavy a Load swings on through the maelstrom of the civil rights movement, welfare advocacy, black nationalism, and feminism to more recent rifts, such as the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings. While doing so, it pieces together the engaging story of the backstage struggles in such early firebrand organizations as the National Association of Colored Women and the National Council of Negro Women. Informative read.

I really appreciated the interest Deborah White has taken in this time period and in these people. The book is intended for those that are truly interested in the development of the role NACW in a hundred year span. The book could be used more specifically for those studying the liberation of women or African Americans in this time period. White is a teacher by profession and that comes though in the book. It was written more to educate, not to entertain.

This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't ...

Purchased this book three or so years ago. Read the first couple pages then just. Ever picked it up again. A month ago I was board and grabbed it off my shelf and started reading.. I had to read and re read pages. It is that interesting. I didn't care how long it took me to read it. For some reason I wanted to understand it. At this moment out of all the books I own this book is probably grabbed me more the anything. I am now trying to read book two but I think I'm going to retread this book a couple more times. This is amazing. Best book I ever bought and I didn't even know it. For the price you will get something priceless. A new understanding. Get a used copy. If you really like it as I do buy the hard copy after that. Buy it! now!

Food for Thought

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so, I ordered the rest of the series and am now halfway through "The Stairway to Heaven."
About the only flaw I found in "The 12th Planet," was Sitchin's abrupt beginning and dense prose. Reading it was a bit like listening to someone speak heavily accented English.
I'm not saying I agree 100% with what he says. I did, however, find it fascinating and the length and breadth of his research astounding.
My suggestion, dear reader, is to do as I did. Buy this book, read it and if you find it and the theories in it intriguing, buy and read the rest.
Ignore all the hoopla for and against you may read here. Read the book and make up your own mind. If nothing else, Sitchin will give you lots to think about for a long time to come.
Oh... and to answer one of the other "reviewers" questions about Niburu breaking up like a comet. Why would it? It's in orbit (according to Sitchin) like all the other planets and since when do comets "break up" anyway? The only time they do is if they run into something like Jupiter.
And Sitchin addresses the idea (far too briefly) of how life could possibly originate on a planet that spends most of its time so far away from the sun. Heat, not light, is what is necessary (he says) for the formation of life. He theorizes that Niburu generates its own heat. {shrug} As good a theory as any, I guess.

Alternative History at it's Best !!!

Very radical alternative history at it's best. Only for the open minded. After reading this book, I realized how much it complemented many of Velikovsky's books,"World's in Collison", "Earth in Upheaval", and "Velikovsky Reconsidered". I highly recommend these to the reader to supplement Sitchin's books. There is a lot of commonality, but Velikovsky approaches his theories as more of a scientist, than from a religious point of view.
Sitchin provides a very detailed approach to deciphering ancient Sumerian history, biblical references, to the history of Earth, Man, and Gods. His theories explain an alternate history to traditional teachings. However, one thing he doesn't actually explain is, "Who created the Nefilim?". I am about to read,"The End of Days", I hope he explains this in that book.
I have used the exterrestrial concept of cloning and infiltrating the Earth in one of my stories (Aliens?) in my book, "The Nightmare Trilogy", available on amazon. However, I use a different concept of the aliens, perhaps, they were from here originally.

A Great Book for Adults Too!

Yes, this is officially a "kids' book" (Ages 9 -14, I believe). However, I, an adult, read it and found it educating and very interesting. I got this book during a visit to James Madison's estate Montpelier. I thought I'd read it first, before getting into the more massive (and more intellectual) biography by Dr. Ketcham. If you're new to James Madison, I'd recommend doing that.
In any case, Jean Fritz' book is an excellent choice for adults as well as children.

Fun for Parents and Children Alike

This has become our favorite read-aloud no pictures story with my toddler. She gets the benefit of hearing spoken language about a subject she likes, and I get to learn something new every time we read it.
I would reccomend this book for older primary, even lower-level High School students. The story is enlightening, and inspiring for all Americans, young and old.

Worthy Introduction to this Founding Father

Jean Fritz has written a great book for both kids and adults, full of interesting facts about the man, his life, his wives (Dolly was his second), and his remarkable presidency. Throughout the book, the reader gets a real sense for how James Madison thought and felt about political issues, and how he overcame the challenges of being small in stature and small of voice to be one of our great presidents. Definitely worth a read to better understand this great man who lived in extraordinary times.

Selfish No More

I live it is crazy how often we can get cough up in our own life's and forget to think about others. Maybe a little brother or friend in need. We really need to put yourself in other peoples shoes more often and think what would we want if we where them. This book will shed some incite on selfishness and provide some good advice and different ways you can improve your character and become a better person! I recommend this book to everyone because improving yourself in positive way can be life changing.

This book is pretty helpful - I know someone who struggles with selfishness (actually we all do to some degree), so this book really helped me understand the causes and effects of selfishness. In the book different topics are covered like how to deal with selfishness, looking deep inside yourself to uncover selfishness, how to stop being selfish, etc. Overall, I’d recommend reading this to anyone who needs to deal with it or who knows someone who struggles with selfishness.
