Nice introduction to parallel programming

This book is a good start for parallel programming. It combines the computer science topics (i.e programming languages terms) with computer architecture terms (i.e. system level details) in a very smotth way. One should know C or Fortran77 in order to understand this topic. These are the only prerequisites to understand the material in this book. You donot need to know anything about parallel programming. However, if you know something about computer architecture, you will read and understand faster. A good to have book!

Nice intro to the basics of ethics and moral theory

Palmer does an excellent job at explaining the philosophical bases of ethics and morality. You will be treated to a thoughtful discussion of virtue ethics, duty ethics, utilitarianism, and even evolutionary ethics. Palmer takes on the theory of egoism, as well as John Rawls' ideas about how to build a just and fair society. Although evidently meant as an introductory textbook (each chapter comes with a list of strengths and weaknesses of each major set of ideas, questions for the reader's consideration, study guide and suggested readings), it's good for anyone interested in ethics. The well drawn and often very funny cartoons (also by Palmer, who is a professor emeritus at the College of Marin) make this little gem a good entry in your philosophical library.

There is some good information for someone looking to grow healthy and natural Dreadlocks. The information was straight forward and easy to understand. My only problem is the price of nearly ten dollars that I paid. I think the author should go back inside and add more pages to make this a real value for the customer.

I think she did a great job on this book. It's very simple and well written. I follow her on YouTube and if you couple watching her videos and reading this book, then you're set. A lot of other books I've read on the subject had way too much information listed for something so simple. A. Wellington breaks it down in simple terms. Great book.

It contains 81 secrets to living a more fulfilled, inspired and purposeful life. And if you put this insightful knowledge into practice I believe you will be a better and more well-liked person. This little book is beautifully layed out and at $9.95 makes a lovely gift for any occasion. One of my favorite secrets is: "Power best expresses itself in gentleness."

Refreshing and disarming ... A perfect little book to spread the joy this holiday season

Warning! Will Robinson! Warning! You are about to enter perilous territory. The economy is going to get worse before it gets better and there is no guarantee it will rebound at all. At such times we all need positive reinforcement and "The Little Book of Secrets" is one of those tools that can bring us out of depression. If we all come up higher won't that affect the country as a whole? Don't be fooled by the title, it's really a misnomer. If there is one thing I would change about the book, it's the title. If you became disenchanted with the "secrets" fad a few years back, don't worry, it's nothing like that. These pages are filled with positive witticisms for meditation and upward striving. The book is a perfect blending of East and West philosophy, kind of like `the best of I Ching' meets Aesop. It opens your mind to new ways of thinking and acting by revealing ancient wisdom in a refreshing and disarming manner. Here is one of the more profound sayings in the book:
"If you neglect your good qualities and virtues, you will cease to be of value to your friends and neighbors. Soon, no one will seek you out or bother about you."
Perhaps I like it because it reminds me of this gnostic quote from the Gospel of Thomas:
"If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you."

Terrific book. Its aimed at kids, however there's plenty of factual information to keep adults interested. It does a good job of laying out the challenges that must be overcome to colonize mars. Explores advantages of going to mars moons.

Despite the simple, kid pitched approach its a decent primer on going to mars.

Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet is co-authored by famous astronaut, Buzz Aldrin who is a strong advocate for space exploration, and Marianne Dyson, who is an award-winning author and former NASA flight controller. In short… these are the experts and they make a very compelling case for the possibility of living on Mars in the future. This book will stretch the imagination of young minds – the future thinkers and explorers.

The book begins with a description of the tools for space exploration (i.e., space crafts, space rovers, and more) followed by a discussion of the history of Martian exploration and a presentation of what we already know about the “Red Planet”. The book even contains a topographical map of Mars – it’s just incredible!

The second half of the book is dedicated to using our imagination to think about what living on Mars would look like and some of the issues we would need to address for it to be habitable. For example, there is no breathable air, it is extremely cold, there is no free-running water, no vegetation, no rain, and far less gravity than Earth (does this mean I would be “lighter”?) There are a series of crisp photographs, groovy illustrations, and even some dioramas depicting things such as high-tech space suits, the dusty rust-colored Martian landscape, and tripped-out bio-domes containing all that is needed to live comfortably. The cynic in me is converting to the idea that it may indeed be possible to live on Mars!

My Bottom Line: Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet features an eye-catching collection of photographs and illustrations and is full of the latest science-based information about Mars, space travel, and more. As with other children from generations passed, who gazed up in wonder toward the night sky, this book tests the limits of the reader’s imagination by challenging them to envision life on the Red Planet. I highly recommend this great book and I think it is the perfect choice for any space enthusiast aged 8 years and older.

My son loved these books. It is hard to find a book that keeps his interest, and I must say to read 3 in a row is quite impressive without me making him read! Very fun, captivating books. We are just starting on the next series of these books. My son can't wait to get the first book!

Great book on the fundamentals

This book is a must read for junior officers 2Lt to CPT and for junior and senior NCO's Sergeant E5 sergeant first class E7. The book goes into detail about planning operations orders and MDMP (military decision making process) then breaks up the specific tactics requires for platoons squads and companies.

In general the book did a great job in explaining the squad, fireteam formations and traveling movements, their advantages and disadvantages. The book was great at explaining the different reactions to contact near and far ambushes as well as how to condict those specific attacks, going into detail on ambushes near and far as well as spoiling attacks, and raids.

In my military career I have learned 3 different methods of the patch the road when crossing danger areas. This book IMO standardized it and gave me the right technique and more importantly the why, compared to other danger areas methods like the heart shaped method.

The book did go into some detail about counterinsurgency and the difference between offensive, defensive and stability operations. The MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) training was very good.

These smartbooks help the soldier to find what they need to read instead of reading multiple books. This is a book when I reach battalion commander I will recommend as reading material for new Lieutenants and Captains and NCO's.

The only thing it didn't have was information on call for fire, combat air-support, basic medical and communications. but other than that the book was excellent. I may read it again to further infuse the information because regardless of my rank, the lessons are good because going up in rank only means you deal with larger elements but the lessons are still valid.

Very Good Book for Essential Basics of Small Unit Operations

This book is NOT going to replace any small unit leader training schools (like OSC, The Basioc School - USMC, squad leader courses, etc., etc.), however IS a VG refresher and reminder manual for those leaders (and - like Larsens's other book on light infantry tactics - is plastic coated and spiral bound, so easy to lay flat and to carry and refer to as may be necessary).

It is especially essential for those infanrty forces that are from countries (or speciffic units - like Support personnel) that do NOT receive this level of training.

I consider this to be a VERY good handbook / manual for those basic - intermediate skills that are needed by LIGHT Infantry troops. And also as a necessity for those Support Personnel who may find themselves suddenly in combat situations and were (unlike the USMC) never trained (or only very basically trained as part of their Basic Training) in Basic to Intermediate Infantry fighing skills.

I would rate this even more exceptional for small unit leaders if obtained along with the author's "Light Infantry Tactics" book that is focused primarily on Individual (and possibly) Fire Team Leaders level, so that small unit leaders from such countries or units (i.e., like above mentioned Support Personnel units) might be able to train their subordinates in those necessary basic skills!

Finally, I would quite strongly recommend that small unit leaders obtain - if possible - Peter McAlee's "Fighting Manual" and H. John Poole's "The Last Hundred Yards" as both are somewhat more advanced / excellent books - and would do very well to round out the above books...

Great information for basic foundation for infantry tactics, and before you move on to the ranger hand book.

Informitive lay out on basic training tactics, great illustrations on defensive postition and other useful information. I like way the information is presented and easy to understand. Great book for a basic infantry tactics and devolope basic foundation ,so you can move to ranger hand book.
