Spooky, gory fun
By Amazon Customer
I've always been a fan of interactive fiction in terms of how it relates to video games. There are some that allow you to make a choice right at the end that deliver different outcomes such as Star Wars The Force Unleashed. There are some that have different endings depending on your actions during the game as with Bioshock. Then there are those that allow players to shape the story to their liking through a series of smaller decision points that help make the overall experience feel more personal - just about any Bioware game ever is a good example of this. One thing that I've yet to really get into however is interactive fiction within the context of literature. I've heard of and even played text adventures in the past and I am familiar with the concept of a choose-your-own-adventure book, but would definitely not call myself an expert in that genre.

When offered a free advanced review copy (ARC) of DAY OF THE FISH-ZOMBIES by the author, Tom Shutt, I gratefully accepted the chance to give interactive literature an honest chance.

There were definitely a couple of things that tripped me up when reading/interacting with this piece. Some of it can certainly be chalked up to quirks of the genre/medium, but I really enjoyed my experience overall and I think this is a piece that has proven to me that interactive literature is something that can really be quite special and fun.

STORY
The story is sort of hard to talk about in just about every aspect, since I as the reader was the one that defined it. The basic premise is that you are at a movie that you probably shouldn't be watching. You are with your two best buddies and as the movie plays there are weird noises coming from outside the mall theater. As fate would have it, you find yourself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse with weirdly fish-like zombies. All of this is introduced very quickly and throws readers immediately into the process of making life or death decisions. When I say "life or death" I don't use the term lightly. The first six or so paths that I took all led to an untimely end for me as the main character. This is a story where a great many of the threads end in the main character's death which sort of sets up a situation where the story is really meant to be read through over and over (albeit with different choices made) in order to get the full picture. The key aspect to this is that things that might have seemed like small details in one path may be attached to much larger plot points when a different set of decisions are made. One major example of this is that there was one session where the main character sees that he has a missed call from his mom. This little detail meant a lot more to me at the time that I read this because I'd already gone down a pathway where the call is actually answered and the mother plays a big role in a number of diverging paths afterwards.

What are perhaps the most interesting aspects of this work is how many paths there are to take and how different each path is from one another. There is a lot of variation to be had depending on your choices and a lot of different characters to be met along the way. Because of all these options and the consequences that they involve, the characters are not as fleshed out as I am used to when reading a book. This isn't really due to any weakness on the part of the way they are portrayed or how the dialogue is handled, it's just a consequence of this being a rather fast work of fiction. You simply won't get as much time with them as you would with characters in a linear novel and by consequence of this, you won't know them as well as you might like to. Ultimately there's nothing that the author could have really done better since the entire premise of this experience is reading short portions of text and making decisions based of your current situation. The only real solution might be to lengthen the amount of text surrounding these characters, but that's not really conducive to going through the story over and over whilst making different choices.

This is a story that branches in the most extreme of senses. One decision begets a multitude of different paths to take which then offer further diversion in turn. It was through taking a bunch of these different paths that I started to get a better sense of the larger picture of the events. The one thing that I did not get a good answer to however was how the zombies came to be, what they really were, or even what becomes of the world now that they are here. A large reason for this is that the story is really only centered on the main character's survival of this event. The possibilities become quite enormous, but upon reaching one survival outcome, readers will be informed that there are eleven letters which can be collected and used to unlock hidden bonus content on the author's main website. This means there are eleven total ways to survive, - I personally only experienced seven of them, but was able to guess at the secret code. I checked out the bonus content that is unlocked with the secret password and was pleased that I'd guessed the code correctly. The content that is available is also pretty neat and it seems like the sort of thing that will receive regular updates, so it'll probably be worth going in to see it more than once. And even without this fun scavenger hunt of sorts, I'd still encourage people to read through to discover different endings (or at least a bunch of them).

There is a wide range of ways in which readers might guide the main character to survival and a vast array of ways to see him die. One down side is that with so many options, there are of course some endings (both for death and survival) that are just inherently cooler than others. It also makes seeing every possible outcome a rather big task to take on, but it is a perfectly enjoyable experience even without seeing each and every ending. It's hard to say too much more than that without spoiling these rewarding moments, but suffice it to say that there are a couple of deaths and survivals that are truly epic to experience.

CHOICES/INTERACTIVITY
One thing that immediately threw me off about this book was the way it makes use of choices. The author described this to me as a choose-your-own-adventure. While I have absolutely no actual familiarity with what that means, I have always been under the impression that it is a story where you as a reader can go down different paths which ultimately lead to a number of endings. Imagine my surprise then when I read through this story six separate times and died at each turn. At the risk of sounding ignorant (or just being wrong) I would argue that this is not a choose-your-own-adventure book at all, but rather a text adventure. There's just a lot more variety than I would associate with a choose-your-own-adventure and it is actually a challenge to come to a real ending (real meaning one in which the main character survives and the reader earns a new survival badge/letter). When I started, I actually got a bit frustrated with the book because I wasn't expecting to die so much. Upon walking away from it, I came upon the realization that this was far more like a text adventure, a game. Once I started thinking about the book as a game, I suddenly gained a new perspective on what I needed to do. I also became far more okay with failing to keep the main character alive and I eventually arrived upon my first survival ending. After that I was hooked and I had a much better understanding of mechanics which I did not initially comprehend.

To be clear, the process of making decisions is quite simple. I was not so inept that I did not understand that clicking one link resulted in a different outcome than choosing another. What tripped me up was that decisions do not always result in outcomes you'd expect and there is no real pattern to success. Selfish decisions in some situations might lead to the main character's survival while selfish choices in another might actually hurl him straight into the arms of death. The same is true for choices that involve generosity of some sort. There's also one set of paths where survival hinges upon the collection of an item. Without it, some situations that would have been survivable will actually end in death. This level of unpredictability made things feel like a bit of a guessing game in some ways, which is ultimately fine since some of the deaths are as interesting as the survivals. It should just be noted that all the random dying did annoy me until I finally won once. Another somewhat odd feature is that one of the most important decisions in the game is actually the first choice that you make since each option sends the reader down two very different paths which then branch out accordingly. In order to see all of the different possibilities, there are sections of the story that will be seen over and over again. This isn't so bad since the pathways are so different and the text is short enough where you can skip over it on future passes and just click the decisions you want. All in all, I actually did enjoy the system. It's just something that I personally found to be an acquired taste which required a shift in how I thought of the work as well as overcoming something of a learning curve.

FORMATTING/PRESENTATION
Aside from some VERY minor typographical errors the editing here is wonderfully done. The worst I came across were things like "THe" versus "The" or "you" versus "your." Other than that, a lot of the visual presentation has really already been covered in prior sections. To summarize: the text in between decisions is always relatively short which allows readers to get right into the meat of this work which is the decision making mechanic.

There aren't any pictures or otherwise remarkable graphical elements to this piece aside from the way that the survivals are handled. Each one gets a "survival badge" which consists of a cute, ironic, or funny tag name and has a description below it that relates to how it was you secured the main character's survival. It's nothing super elaborate, but it was certainly a nice touch that made reaching a survival ending feel that much more like an accomplishment.

One thing that did feel a little off in terms of how the story is presented is that in some ways, it feels like a YA story-line, but in others, I'd consider it to be more of an adult work. The narrative features younger characters and is written in a way that feels decidedly more juvenile, but there are also aspects of it, namely the gore, that make it feel a bit less like something I'd consider to be YA. There's nothing super over the top here, but it's definitely something that's more of a high school and up type of thing.

CONCLUSION
Overall, I enjoyed this book a great deal. It didn't necessarily blow me away or change my life, but it did introduce me to a new type of fiction and provide me with several hours of good fun. My initial confusion with some of the genre-specific elements were honestly to be expected given that this is my first time exploring this type of literature. While restating that I'm no expert in this area, I felt that this was a technically strong piece that made the most of it's interactive nature and provided a lot of different incentives for readers to keep going back in and exploring different possibilities. It was even more enjoyable for me since I read this in the month of October, though this would be a fun read even outside of the spookiest month of the year. This is definitely an easy one for me to recommend whether or not you're someone who is a regular consumer of interactive fiction. Veterans will probably have a much easier time diving into the work and newcomers can certainly catch onto some of the nuances like I did. If you're in need of a good pre-Halloween read, or are just up for a zombie story where you get to make the bad decisions, then DAY OF THE FISH-ZOMBIES definitely has you covered.

I survived, then I died, then I died again!
By Jane
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I survived, then I died, then I died again!

It has been ages since I've read a choose your own adventure book and I was glad I gave this one a try! I really liked it and I thought it would particularly appeal to pre-teen boys, which from a teacher's point of view can sometimes be a difficult group to encourage to read. The author obviously put a TON of work into this and there are so many possibilities, so many choices to make, so many different paths to take! The book was well written, had plenty of excitement, a bit of child appropriate gore, it kind of reminded me a bit of the Goosebumps books I used to read when I was a kid. A great read for kids that love adventure and a book that will keep them busy for hours trying out all the different choice combinations!

Unique book that lets you decide where the story goes !
By Ramona Plant
What an incredible book and different from anything you have ever read. At first I thought there is no way this will work, but it clearly did! It is completely interactive and lets you decide where the story goes. I have no idea how Tom did this, but it is a master piece giving the reader finally the power of saying "what are you thinking going in there, you know the bad guy is waiting". We have all been there wishing the characters would listen, but obviously they never do. Finally you were at the helm and could make some smart decisions for your character.

I find this an intriguing book and it is awesome that you can read it multiple times and it can be different every single time if you choose to!

I have received this book from the author for an honest review.

Review

From the reviews:

"The goals of this textbook … were to provide state-of-the-art information on colon and rectal surgery for residents in training and for fully trained surgeons seeking recertification. Dr. Fleshman and his fellow editors should be congratulated for achieving these goals … . In summary, this book represents a succinct yet comprehensive and up-to-date review of colon and rectal surgery. It is already proving popular with our own trainees, and I suspect it will become required reading on both sides of the Atlantic." (John Hartley, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Vol. 51, 2008)

From the reviews of the second edition:

“The book targets the needs of trainees in colon and rectal surgery and practitioners of the specialty. It also would serve as a useful resource for gastroenterologists and an advanced source for medical students. The authorship is predominantly U.S. practitioners in colon and rectal surgery with a few international exceptions. … This is an excellent update of the authoritative reference standard for this specialty. … it achieves its goals and should be within easy reach of all practitioners and trainees in the field.” (John W. Cromwell, Doody’s Review Service, October, 2011)

The Night Country: A Novel, by Stewart O'Nan

A ghost story that begins in everyday tragedy, from a distinctly American master of both forms: a "scary, sad, funny . . . mesmerizing read" (Stephen King)

At Midnight on Halloween in a cloistered New England suburb, a car carrying five teenagers leaves a winding road and slams into a tree, killing three of them. One escapes unharmed, another suffers severe brain damage. A year later, summoned by the memories of those closest to them, the three that died come back on a last chilling mission among the living.

A strange and unsettling ghost story, The Night Country creeps through the leaf-strewn streets and quiet cul-de-sacs of one bedroom community, reaching into the desperately connected yet isolated lives of three people changed forever by the accident: Tim, who survived yet lost everything; Brooks, the cop whose guilty secret has destroyed his life; and Kyle's mom, trying to love the new son the doctors returned to her. As the day wanes and darkness falls, one of them puts a terrible plan into effect, and they find themselves caught in a collision of need and desire, watched over by the knowing ghosts.

Macabre and moving, The Night Country elevates every small town's bad high school crash into myth, finding the deeper human truth beneath a shared and very American tragedy. As in his highly-prized Snow Angels and A Prayer for the Dying, once again Stewart O'Nan gives us an intimate look at people trying to hold on to hope, and the consequences when they fail.

More poignant than terrifying, this contemporary ghost story set in suburban Connecticut focuses on the survivors of a car accident that killed three teenagers on Halloween exactly a year before the novel begins. Tim escaped without a scratch, but seeks to assuage his survivor's guilt on the first anniversary of the event. Kyle, once a teen rebel, is now a brain-damaged shadow (a kind of zombie) of his former self. Brooks, the townie cop who discovered the accident, watches helplessly as his life skids out of control. And most poignant of all, Nancy Sorensen, Kyle's mother, stoically cares for her damaged son and tries to heal a marriage nearly destroyed by grief. These sad characters are haunted in another way as well, by the ghosts of the three killed instantly in the crash: Marco, Toe and Danielle, who address themselves directly to the reader. "We're on a mission," they say, but their objective is never explicitly stated; they just observe as the day's events unfold. Each character's story is told (and, eventually, woven together) in O'Nan's simple, searching prose, which captures the inchoate passion and longing of teenage life as well as the bleak resignation of middle age. O'Nan demonstrates remarkable restraint; there's no grasping for tragic meaning (the accident was "just something random that happened to us, bad luck," according to Marco) or melodrama. Despite some confusing shifts in time-it's occasionally hard to decipher what's happening now and what happened then-a coherent thesis of misfortune emerges: death has many victims, and the ghosts haunting the survivors don't only appear on Halloween.

From Booklist
The aftermath of a Halloween tragedy haunts a New England town on the one-year anniversary of a typical teen joyride that ended with a car wrapped around a tree. Toe, Marco, and Danielle were instantly killed. Kyle lives on, sort of; a severe brain injury obliterates the rebel in him, the accident leaving him with the mind of a child. Tim, "the lucky one" in the backseat, his arms around Danielle, survived but now has a death wish. Officer Brooks, the first on the scene, was terribly altered by the event, and his life is in shambles. Now, on Halloween, he fears that Tim is going to do something horrible. Travis and Greg, buds of Toe, don't want the day to go by without memorializing their dear departed friends. O'Nan, author of Wish You Were Here [BKL F 1 02], tells a ghost story from the point of view of Marco's ghost. Like the narrator of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones [BKL My 1 02], Marco (along with Danielle and Toe) can witness the lives of those they left behind, see the impact their deaths have had on the community, but have little direct effect on certain inevitabilities--an interesting literary contrivance that doesn't always pay off (see Douglas Coupland's Girlfriend in a Coma (1998) and Hey, Nostradamus [BKL My 15 03] for other examples of this vantage point). O'Nan's voice is compelling, his prose lovely and evocative. Benjamin Segedin

Haunted Look At A Halloween Car Wreck ...
By Kindle Customer
And the lives altered by it. Stewart O'Nan takes the lives of all the people involved in a terrible car wreck on Halloween, puts them under a magnifying glass and forces you to watch their shattered existences play out in this brilliant novel he dedicated to Ray Bradbury-another God of the written word.

The story is told from the perspective of ghost teenagers who perished in the crash. When their loved ones think of them, which is almost all the time, they are summoned to their sides to watch on helpless, as their lives spiral out of control from losing them.

When you reach the midway point of this book, you'll think it's nothing more than a deep character study of these ruined lives, but then O'Nan takes you in a completely different direction, turning his prose into suspense, taking hold of your mind until you reach the final page.

This guy knows how to write and keep the reader wondering what the hell is going on in a good way. And as with any meaningful book, the characters in this one stay with you after the final page is turned.

The Night Country was my first O'Nan book and after turning page fifty, I got back on here fast and ordered more of his works. This isn't a bad place to start, I think.

This one will stay with you ... trust me.

Home is where your losses are...
By P. Padden
The Night Country begins with a seductive invitation: "Come then, come with us, out into the night... come stalk the dark back roads and stand outside the bright houses, calm as murderers in the yard, quiet as deer."
It's Cabbage Night, the night before Hallowe'en in Avon, Connecticut, and you've just been invited to spend some quality time with Marco and Toe and Danielle, beginning on this cool autumn night that "smells of dust and coriander on the wind."
"It's the best time of year up here," Marco tells us - "witch hunts and woodsmoke... a 'new' England... veined with black rivers and massacres."
Marco and Danielle and Toe are three sweet, feisty, and very likeable teens, or at least they were until last Hallowe'en when, joyriding around the back roads, tired after working at their menial jobs, but happy just being together - "wanting the night to last forever" - they die in a horrific accident. Also in the car are Kyle, their bud-dealing Goth pal, and Tim, Danielle's sweet, introspective boyfriend.
Part of Kyle survives the accident, but with brain damage so severe that his personality, his prickly rebelliousness, is deadened. "Imagine diving off a five story building and landing on your face," suggests Marco. "Now imagine getting better." Kyle's nose and cheeks and forehead are prostheses - "only his chin is the same, and his hands."
Tim, Danielle's boyfriend, is the only one to survive the accident physically intact, but he's lost everything - all of the friendship and love that gave his life its meaning. Plagued by loss and survivor's guilt, he no longer feels any sense of belonging to - or in - the world.
More than the dead, these living victims haunt Officer Brooks, the police officer who initiates the high speed chase that precipitates the accident, but it's the dead who mess with Brooksie's head, sitting, invisible, in his kitchen teasing his dogs to make them bark - egging him on to commit the unspeakable - "We've seen him hang up his gun in slow motion, deliberate as a horror flick, and only Toe's twisted enough to make the holster swing, a cheesy temptation." Toe's ghost is twitching for vindication and revenge - he was the one behind the wheel, seemingly responsible for his own death as well as his friends'.
Danielle's ghost tries desperately to soothe Tim's appalling loneliness, and to fend off his desire to join her - "This must be how Dylan Klebold felt," Tim thinks on the heartbreaking anniversary of the accident - "knowing he was going to school the next day and never coming home." And Marco narrates it all for us with a kind of edgy detachment as the six characters are compelled to act out the final scenes of their intimately enmeshed lives and deaths.
Loneliness and isolation stalk through the pages of The Night Country as Kyle's mom struggles with the pity she can't abide and the fear of being perceived as a monster if she tries to move beyond her grief to resume a normal life, and Officer Brooks struggles to atone for the one tragic mistake that he made too late in his career and his life to forgive himself. Tim is a pariah now - the kids at school see his dead friends as legends, and Tim as an anomaly - not a lucky survivor, but a victim, the other one who should have died.
The book ends in a cataclysmic liebestodt of vindication and vengeance, remembrance and redemption, and in its final paragraph answers Marco's poignant question, "Where would we be if love ended at death?"
The emotional impact of this book belies its brevity. As with much of what Mr. O'Nan writes, I had a good cry reading it - several of them, in fact. The weird part was, my box of tissues kept disappearing and then turning up someplace that I knew I hadn't left it. Toe, probably. He'd be twisted enough.

Ethics and the Sociology of Morals (Great Minds), by Emile Durkheim

Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) was one of the founders of modern sociology. Ethics and the Sociology of Morals (La science positive de la morale en Allemagne) laid the foundation for Durkheim's future work. More than a review of current thought, it was a proclamation that ethics needed to be liberated from its philosophical bondage and developed as a distinct branch of sociology. Written when Durkheim was charting the course of his own research, it provides a unique key to the interpretation of his earlier work and presents a number of points of Durkheim's ethical theory which are of considerable interest in light of current ethical theory. This volume makes available in English a crucial essay by a master of social thought.

Bridges: The science and art of the world's most inspiring structures, by David Blockley

Bridges touch all our lives - every day we are likely to cross a bridge, or go under one. How many of us stop to consider how the bridge stands up and what sort of people designed and built something so strong?

Bridge building is a magnificent example of the practical and every day use of science. However, the story of bridges goes beyond science and technology, and involves issues relating to artistic and cultural development. After all, bridges are built by people, for people. Bridges can be icons for whole cities; just consider New York's Brooklyn Bridge, London's Tower Bridge, and Sydney's Harbour Bridge. Such bridges can be considered functional public art, as they have the power to delight or be
an eyesore.

David Blockley explains how to read a bridge, in all its different forms, design, and construction, and the way the forces flow through arches and beams. He combines the engineering of how bridges stand up with the cultural, aesthetic, and historical importance they hold. Drawing on examples of particular bridges from around the world, he also looks in detail at the risk engineers take when building bridges, and examines why things sometimes go wrong.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this fascinating exploration for lay readers, Blockley lucidly explains both the basic forces at work on every bridge—tension, compression, and shear—and the structural elements combating those forces: beams, arches, trusses, and suspension cables. He succeeds in his desire to read a bridge like a book. Following fellow civil engineers and writers David Billington and Henry Petroski, Blockley makes clear that engineers as much as architects and scientists design bridges and that technology is not merely applied science. The author provides an excellent history of bridge construction, from primitive rope bridges and Roman aqueducts to 19th- and 20th-century railroad bridges and contemporary achievements like Japan's Akashi-Kaiky Bridge, which has the largest central span of any suspension bridge. The author also discusses important bridge failures and the lessons learned from them, including the Minnesota I-35 bridge, and the less seriously damaged London Millennium Bridge, which was closed for two years after opening day's huge crowds caused wobbling. Blockley concludes that bridges do not merely transport people and goods but also help us express some of our deepest emotions. Bold, insightful statements help make this a remarkable work. 50 b&w illus. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Bridges vault valleys and leap rivers, but how? British civil-engineering professor Blockley answers in this “attempt to help nontechnical readers understand the technical issues bridge builders have to face.” Emanating from the engineer’s abiding anxiety to ensure against structural failure, such issues are successfully clarified in the author’s engaging presentation. Essentially, the bridge engineer calculates the physical forces acting on the materials and shapes used to construct a bridge, but, as Blockley iterates throughout, engineering knowledge about how a bridge will perform has finite or indeterminable dimensions. The bridge collapses he describes were typically caused by some previously unrecognized behavior, and the collection of behaviors learned through bridge-building experience infuses Blockley’s arrangement of bridges into four classifications—beams, arches, trusses, and suspensions. If we cross bridges unmindful of the forces they tame, Blockley’s text, sketches, simple equations, and photographs instill appreciation for a physical dynamism that the engineer aspires to control. Also discussing the architectural beauty of bridges, this is a model explanation of technological design for a general audience. --Gilbert Taylor

A fascinating introduction to the world's bridges for the general reader
By Michael from Bristol
This book is written by a professor of engineering, but with the general reader in mind. Although it deals with technical matters, these are presented in a way that does not require a high level of mathematics or physics. It has 50 illustrations including many magnificent photographs.

The structure of the book is as clear as the structure of the bridges that it discusses. After an introductory chapter it considers the four main types of bridge in turn; beams, arches, trusses, and suspension. It then considers the question of safety, and finally the development and maintenance of bridges as team work.

Bridges are considered as works of art as well as civil engineering, and the book is very rich in references to other arts and to culture in the widest sense, with references to Newton, Kant, Michelangelo, Giotto, Palladio, Herodotus, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, and many others. David Blockley also considers bridges as symbols, icons, landmarks, and as objects of inspiration.

There are fascinating sections on many celebrated bridges including the wobbly Millennium Bridge, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Salginatobel Bridge, and the Millau Viaduct.

This is also a book that could be of value to schools. It brings maths and physics to life, and could be a vehicle for taking students on trips to visit bridges to see how these disciplines are used in practice in ways that are important as transport links as well as being imaginative and inspirational.

Not an easy read
By Dr. B. W. Langer
Thank goodness I had an engineering course 50 yrs. ago. This was not a book for the lay reader. It was poorly organized - facts mixed with philosophy -- what a mix!!! Book needed more and better illustrations.

I would definately not recommend this book for the person seeking a basic understanding of bridges. Sorry - If you have a math/civil engineering background , you'll survive the book otherwise you won't.

Eye-Opening
By Tritia James
I sometimes read books on a subject in which I don't feel any particular interest and know very little about, just to deepen my understanding of the world, and to see if perhaps it is an interesting subject once you take the time to consider it. That is why I picked up this book, along with several other books about bridges. This is the book that caught my imagination. It was so fascinating! I love how this author was able to take what could be a lot of dry facts about physics, materials, and construction and weave them into such a beautiful "story" about the who/what/where/when/how of bridges. No, I didn't understand every one of the physics concepts, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the book. Also, there were many concepts that I did understand thanks to the wonderful analogies the author used to illustrate them. I also saw that the physics of a bridge is a huge part of what makes a bridge a thing of beauty and wonder. I would suggest reading this book while simultaneously looking at a book of well-done color photographs of the bridges that are discussed in this book. Up till now, I've never even considered the bridges I've crossed. But now that I have a basic understanding of bridges, I will certainly notice them. And knowing how to look at them, I will certainly see their brilliance and beauty. Any book that increases my sense of wonder at some aspect of our world gets five stars!
