Book Description

Software today has to work with more data, more users, more cores, and more servers than ever. Akka is a distributed computing toolkit that enables developers to build correct concurrent and distributed applications using Java and Scala with ease, applications that scale across servers and respond to failure by self-healing. As well as simplifying development, Akka enables multiple concurrency development patterns with particular support and architecture derived from Erlang's concept of actors (lightweight concurrent entities). Akka is written in Scala, which has become the programming language of choice for development on the Akka platform.

Learning Akka aims to be a comprehensive walkthrough of Akka. This book will take you on a journey through all the concepts of Akka that you need in order to get started with concurrent and distributed applications and even build your own.

Beginning with the concept of Actors, the book will take you through concurrency in Akka. Moving on to networked applications, this book will explain the common pitfalls in these difficult problem areas while teaching you how to use Akka to overcome these problems with ease.

The book is an easy to follow example-based guide that will strengthen your basic knowledge of Akka and aid you in applying the same to real-world scenarios.

About the Author

Jason Goodwin is a developer who is primarily self-taught. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to study business at school, but he started programming when he was 15 and always had a high level of interest in technology. This interest led his career to take a few major changes away from the business side and back into software development. His journey has led him to working on high-scale distributed systems. He likes to create electronic music in his free time.

He was first introduced to an Akka project at a Scala/Akka shop―mDialog―that built video ad insertion software for major publishers. The company was acquired by Google eventually. He has also been an influential technologist in introducing Akka to a major Canadian telco to help them serve their customers with more resilient and responsive software. He has experience of teaching Akka and functional and concurrent programming concepts to small teams there. He is currently working via Adecco at Google.

Amazing book for learning akka from scratch.
    By Sunil Kavali
An Amazing introduction to akka. Tried to read the akka documentation which was dry and lengthy, so brought this book to read it in kindle. The book is very enjoyable. The reader is expected to know scala or java.

    Excellent Introduction to Akka
    By Abhishek Srivastava
This book is great to get you started to Akka. Prior to this I was lost between multiple blogs and internet resources. This book is very nice and gave me a solid start. Now every other resource on the internet is making sense to me.

Thank you so much to the author. Jason Goodwin. I really like his writing style and the content of the book.

Great introduction to Akka to get going fast. Code in the Kindle version is unformatted and hard to read, though.
    By C. Berkebile
Great content. This will definitely get you started with Akka if you haven't already used it.

The book assumes a working knowledge of either Scala or Java 8. Code examples are always provided in both languages, so you only need to know one of the two. This book also assumes knowledge of basic Java concurrency features (synchronization, atomics, volatile, etc.). You don't need to be an expert with Java concurrency to read this book, but you should at least know what synchronization is in Java and how to do it, for example.

I read the Kindle version. A heads up, (and, this is the reason I docked a star), the code examples are not formatted for the Kindle (who needs line breaks?). Luckily, there is a GitHub repository where the example code resides which is much easier to read.

The book introduces you to Akka via a very hands-on approach, asking you to write the code for two applications you build upon as you progress through the material. Homework assignments are provided at the end of each chapter to test your comprehension. I prefer hands-on approaches and this is the reason I give the book a solid 4 stars. Don't expect this to be all-inclusive. This will get you productive in Akka fast, but you will not REALLY know what you are doing if this is all you read. However, that is exactly what I needed (I recently picked up a project that relies heavily on Akka) for me to get started with hacking on Akka based projects.

If you are a swift learner, you could get through this book in two 8 hour work days by skimming it if you know Scala pretty well (prior knowledge of Futures, Promises, Concurrency, Scala's type system features like case classes or Java 8 lambdas, etc. really helps, here). I got through half of the material in 6 hours. Most people will probably want to take a week to digest the material presented in this book and work through the examples, though.

I really liked being able to compare the Java vs the Scala code side-by-side throughout the book.

    About the Author
Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun was Inspector General of the Religious Technology Center (RTC), the organization that controls the copyrights and trademarks of the materials relating to Dianetics and Scientology. His role was to head the Inspector General Network, described by the Church of Scientology as "an independent investigatory and policing body whose function is to keep Scientology working by ensuring the pure and ethical use of Dianetics and Scientology technology." The post is one of the most senior management functions in the Church and its related organizations. Rathbun left the Church of Scientology in 2004. He is now an independent Scientologist. As such he and his wife, Monique, provide counseling and auditing services for other Scientologists that have cut their ties with the Church of Scientology. He emerged as a critical source in a 2009 Tampa Bay Times expose on the organization, revealing that physical violence is a common occurrence within Scientology management, and that Scientology head David Miscavige regularly beats his staff, and orders staff to administer beatings to designated individuals. The series by the Times titled "Inside Scientology: The Truth Rundown" (http://tinyurl.com/mjcnfv) was recognized with honors including the 2010 Gold Medal for Public Service award from the Florida Society of News Editors, and was a finalist for the 2010 National Headliner Awards in the category of investigative reporting. Rathbun has also been profiled by the following publications: The UK Independent weekly magazine: http://tinyurl.com/cwahwzy Texas Monthly magazine: http://tinyurl.com/758rb75 The Village Voice: http://tinyurl.com/5tjnhuc Rathbun operates a blog called Moving On Up a Little Higher: markrathbun.wordpress.com

    For Believers Only
    By Steve Harrison
The key to understanding this book is that its title is truthful: the author, while no longer a top official of the Church of Scientology, is -- still -- a Scientology Warrior. This is not of the "I-was-a-Scientologist-until-I-realized-it-is-phony" genre.

Rathbun is a true believer. He compares L. Ron Hubbard to the Buddha. His descriptions of Scientology's teachings are supportive and sympathetic. He even seems to accept the Xenu story, suggesting that it is in essence consistent with Gnostic philosophy (which is true, though the same can be said more convincingly of Mormonism; in any event, Rathbun does not explain why the fact that it echoes a recurrently-popular idea over two thousand years old proves that it was a cosmic insight of L. Ron Hubbard). The books' theme is that David Miscavige has perverted and largely destroyed a religion that could have brought wisdom and health to the world, mostly by defeating psychiatrists. Rathbun's animus against them stems from his dislike of the psychiatrist who treated his brother, who was apparently psychotic; this is a principal subject of the book's five introductory biographical chapters, which is, with all due respect, about three too many. They do explain, though, that like so many of the people who have joined and left Scientology Rathbun was a rootless child from a dysfunctional family who lacked education beyond High School.

Much of the book deals with Rathbun's involvement in coordinating legal matters, mostly lawsuits against Hubbard and Scientology. Although he has no legal training his experience gave him a good understanding of litigation. His descriptions of law, procedure, and strategy, as well as of the kinds of debates and discussions that go on behind the scenes before and during trials, are accurate.

The book discusses a few of Scientology's embarrassing episodes and acknowledges that they occurred with Hubbard's knowledge and approval, and generally at his inspiration. But it presents them as unfortunate excesses committed as overreactions to nefarious acts of Scientology's vicious and unprincipled "enemies," including psychiatrists, law enforcement, and various state and federal government agencies. Rathbun tells us that he has seen documents proving that the psychiatrists, etc., did lots of bad things but that the documents couldn't actually be revealed, you see, because even though they were stolen by Scientologists (one of those unfortunate excesses) to prove these things, revealing them would harm Scientology.

The book's editors are Scientologist friends of Rathbun; his prose is clear and easily-read but a professional might have pointed out that it does not always recognize where real English stops and Scientology jargon begins. The proofreading is not perfect; there are, at least at the moment, a few typos and places where information is repeated, clearly inadvertently, but not enough to be bothersome.

    What a read!
    By Amazon Customer
Loved this book. It reads like an action adventure story. Filled with a "what next" adventure while giving the non-fiction back story on the inside workings of the Church of Scientology from the only man who could tell it. We are blessed that Mark/Marty is in a position and willing to share his story. I enjoyed and I learned and more than once had tears rolling down my cheeks. What more could I ask for?

And, for the record, it is shocking for anyone Scientologist or just interested human being to discover the depth of depravity within the church.

Honest reflections by a key former Scientologist
    By M. Fisher
Memoirs of a Scientology Warrior is a MUST READ for any current or former members of Scientology. Marty Rathbun goes into detail concerning the major legal situations that confronted Scientology in the 70s and 80s. Many of us in Scientology were told to ignore what was going on and were fed a public relations line about what we should think about the dirty and dark activities of Scientology. In this book we get the facts from a key player. The book is also an honest reflection on Marty's many years in Scientology and, after time for examination, a clearer sense about L.Ron Hubbard, his life and technology. The information about LRH in his later years including his interview with one of the last people to live with LRH is page turning and enlightening.

She was coming. From his office overlooking the sea, Count Alessandro Alonso Leopold Volta watched the launch approach the island that was home to Castello di Volta and the seat of the Volta family for more than five hundred years.

The boat hadn't even docked and already the bitter taste of bile hovered menacingly at the back of his throat.

He growled. He hated visitors, hated the way they brought the smell of the outside world with them, as if clinging to their very clothes. He hated their wide-eyed stares and their looks of horror when they first saw his scars, horror that bleached their faces white and sent their eyes skidding away to the floor or to the nearest work of art. Anywhere, it seemed, that wasn't his face.

But most of all he hated their pity, for the horror always gave way to pity.

    He preferred the horror.

His hands curled into fists at his side. He didn't want anyone's pity.

    He didn't want anyone. Period.

The launch slowed, rocking sideways on the bumpy water as it neared the dock and its wash caught up with it. He ground his teeth together and turned away, knowing that this time he had no choice. The package found tucked away in the caves deep beneath the castle had seen to that.

Why here? he asked himself again. Why, of all the places in the world, of all the places that would welcome the attention such a discovery would bring, why had what could be the lost pages from the fabled Salus Totus, the legendary Book of Wholeness, had to turn up here? When had fate taken to wearing a clown's mask?

He grunted his displeasure and dropped into the chair behind his desk. One week Professor Rousseau had promised him the job would take. No longer than one week to examine and document the pages, to determine whether they were genuine, and if so to stabilise their condition until they could be taken away and prepared for display. One short yet no doubt interminable week, with a stranger clattering around the castle, asking questions and expecting answers, and probably expecting him to be civil in the process.

He looked down at the file he'd been reviewing before the onshore wind had carried with it the thumping beat of an approaching engine, but his skin pulled achingly tight over his jaw and the words before him danced and spun and could have been printed in a different language for all the sense they made.

It could be worse, he rationalised, clamping down on the rising black cloud of his resentment, forcing himself to focus on the resume in his hands. He flipped the page, turning to the photograph of the woman he was expecting. Reputedly one of the best conservators in the business, Professor Rousseau boasted more than forty years' experience in the industry. And with short grey hair cut helmet-style around features that looked as if they'd been sculpted from parchment rather than skin, she looked the kind of person who enjoyed books more than people. If he had to put up with a visitor to his island, he could do much worse than this shrivelled-up scientist.

Maybe. And yet still this heavy sense of foreboding persisted in his gut; still the jagged line of his scar burned and stung, as if someone had dragged their nails down his face and chest and sliced open his wound.

One week, he thought, touching fingers to his burning cheek, half surprised when they didn't come away wet and sticky with blood. One week with a stranger poking around his castle, asking questions, getting under his feet. And whoever she was, and however she looked, it would be one week too long.

The title should have included the term "an overview"
    By Brian Barnett
If I had known nothing about chassis design and this was the first book I had read, then I would say that this rates rather well and would be more than adequate for a starting point. Having read several books pertaining to suspension geometries, chassis design and construction, composite application and driveline integration in modern race cars, I find it lacking in detail sufficient to actually build a car.
In reality, the detail needed to actually design and build a chassis for a specific car would require much more detail than this book provides. Stress analysis by suspension components and downforce, tubing diameter and wall thickness considerations, material types and their correct application, heat treating requirements after welding, welding methods for specific materials, jig construction, body attachment to frame, safety cage construction considerations, component mounting, mockup materials and proper "scaling" of strength and torsional rigidity ratings and many other aspects of chassis construction are not adequately discussed in this book for the designer / builder to make educated decisions prior to putting "rubber on the road".
The author hints at many of these and actually briefly discusses some of them, BUT I would not feel safe designing a chassis based on that information alone. Again, great for the beginner as "an overview". Should also recommend other follow-on readings at the end with a synopsis of the strengths of the recommendations.

Must have for the serious amatuer car builder.
    By Ian Carter
This was the third book I bought after I'd decided to build three Lotus Seven type sports cars. While he discusses many types of chassis designs, materials and construction methods, the author addresses the subject in a logical, easy to understand manner. From the historical context, through the principles influencing chassis development, to the contemporary high performance product. There are also examples of bad engineering faults, to be avoided by advance planning. This approach gives the reader insight that is applicable to all chassis types. This book gave me a level of understanding that has enabled me to research and plan my project; selecting and importantly, comprehending more specialised books as needed. It is still constantly referred to.
